• Two days later England and France declared war on Germany.

• WWII had begun!

V. Nazi Offensives (Blitzkrieg)

• by 1940, Nazi Germany overran Poland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium

• Allies (French & British) cannot compete with Nazi Blitz

•

VI.The War in Europe• Nazi Germany is winning a “new” kind of war from Great Britain in the West to Russia in the East

• Great Britain is constantly being bombed

• The Allies needed to land on mainland Europe

•  "We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and the oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

• “Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.”

•  “Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty, and so bear ourselves that if the British Commonwealth and its Empire lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.' “
