About our Maths activities

Mental Maths startersChoose one of the challenges to complete. These should be quick

starters lasting about 5 minutes.

ActivitiesThis week we will be setting different activities for Maths and not

using the Maths No Problem book for this week.

Monday 8th June

L.O – To accurately add numbers using a part-part whole model

• I can draw a part-part whole model.• I can use a part-part whole model to add numbers together.• I can write an addition number sentence using + and =.

What happens to the answer when we add two numbers together?

A part-part whole model can help us when adding numbers together.

You need to add the two parts together to make the whole.

To help you add 2 and 5 together you could count on in your head. Remember to start with the biggest number.

When adding we can count on in our head by starting with the bigger number.

We can also draw dots in the part-part whole to help us find the whole or we could draw our own number line.

Activity Time!Complete the problem below.

You can use a tens frame or the part part whole model to show your answers.

E.g. You You could draw pictures or write the numbers.

7 + 1 = 8What are all the different ways to make 8?

8

For a trickier challenge do this with a different number. How many different ways can we make 15? E.g. 14+1, 13+2.

Mental Maths StarterDiscuss with an adult.

Is 4 + 2 the same as 2 + 4?

What do you notice about adding?

Can the numbers be put in any order?

Tuesday Starter

Tuesday 9th June

L.O – To accurately subtract numbers.

• I can use a part-part whole model to help subtract.• I can use – and = in a number sentence.

What happens to the answer when we subtract?

We always need to start with the bigger number when we subtract. This would be the whole.

8 – 5 =

To find the answer we could count back in our head. Put the 8 in your head and count back 5. You could draw dots in the part-part whole or draw a number line as well.

Activity Time! What subtraction questions could you ask about the picture?

E.g. There are 9 sheep altogether. 5 are looking to the right. How many are looking to the left?

For a trickier challenge you could draw your own farm scene picture and write some subtraction questions for it. Remember to use a part-part whole to show your question and answer.

Mental Maths StarterChoose your challenge, green, amber or red!Use your skills of counting on and counting back.

6 + 2 = 4 – 2 = 8 + 2 = 10 – 3 =

16 + 2 = 14 – 5 = 14 + 6 = 20 – 3 =

23 + 4 = 27 – 8 = 36 + 10 = 34 – 6 =

Answers on next slide

Mental Maths StarterChoose your challenge, green, amber or red!Use your skills of counting on and counting back.

6 + 2 = 84 – 2 = 28 + 2 = 1010 – 3 = 7

16 + 2 = 1814 – 5 = 914 + 6 = 2020 – 3 = 17

23 + 4 = 2727 – 8 = 1936 + 10 = 4634 – 6 = 28

Wednesday Starter

Wednesday 10th June

L.O – To write a number fact family

• I can explore addition and subtraction fact families using pictures and objects.• I can see the relationship between addition and subtraction.• I can write a number fact family.

Discuss:If we know 12 + 1 = 13 what else do we know?

We can draw a part-part whole model to help us.

We know the two parts are 12 and 1 and the whole is 13.

We can add 1 + 12 = 13. We can also subtract the parts from the whole. 13 – 12 = 1 and 13 – 1 = 12 Remember we always

subtract from the whole.

Activity Time!Look at the picture.

Draw a part-part whole model to show this.

What number sentences can you write from this? There will be two addition and two subtraction number sentences.

Thursday Starter

Mental Maths StarterWrite 4 number sentences using the part-part whole model. Two will be addition and two will be subtraction.

Thursday 11th June

L.O – To compare number sentences.

• I can add two numbers together.• I can subtract numbers.• I can compare number sentences by using bigger than, smaller than

and equal to.

We can compare number sentences by finding the answer to the problem.

Representing the questions using tens frames can help us see the answer and compare the number sentences.

We can see that these answers are the same.

Activity Time!Draw a part-part whole to show each problem and write the number sentence.

Write down how you know who has more sweets left.

As an extra challenge, can you write your own problem like this and compare the answers?
