Started as a counseling centre in 2001 with an objective to organize people with emotional difficulties. The organization hoped to sustain itself with the self generated income through the sale of traditional crafts and products from groups of rural women.

The center eventually grew into an informal group consisting of theatre artists, musicians, painters, sculptors and social workers who came together to share common concerns beyond their respective mediums, seeking new avenues for self expression. Attempting to remain independent while working together. Constructing new spaces for performance, expression, communication, mutual support as well as generating an income is the major emphasis.

Mathematics is inseparably intertwined with everyday life of any human being, however when it is taught as an isolated subject in the formal schooling, the life is lost and children fail to understand the significance and relevance in life beyond examination. Any knowledge if at all produced remains inert. Numbers become scary and there is aversion towards mathematics.

Realistic mathematic education is one such initiative with an intention to restore the meaning and relevance of mathematical education in our life and dispel the aversion towards mathematics.

Through this means of teaching a space is provided for children to discover their potentials where they learn to invent and reinvent and eventually own the knowledge.

This approach encourages teachers to be aware of the child’s background & capacities and accordingly create a conducive learning environment.

Abhay Art Gallery and Counseling Center ’s intervention in the field of education was motivated by the association with Jodo Gyan, the leading educational institution in New Delhi. Jodo Gyan inspired by Fruedenthal Institute, Amsterdam, actively involved in literacy movements in the slums and promotion of realistic approach in mathematic education. Navnirmiti, another organization in Mumbai working for universal active mathematic education also approved and supported our efforts in Kerala.
