TOP TWO TO TANGO: On America’s 241st birthday, the Dodgers begin
a three-game NL-West showdown with the second-place Arizona
Diamondbacks in a contest that is also the first of a six-game homestand to
close out the first half of the season. Los Angeles is a Major-League best 20-
4 since June 7 and owns the best record in the National League at 55-29
(.655), just 1.5 games behind the Astros for the best record in baseball.
Following this series, the Boys in Blue wrap up the first half with a three-
game weekend Interleague tilt against the Kansas City Royals.
The Dodgers are 3-4 against the Snakes this season and haven’t
seen the Phoenix squad since a victory on April 23 that improved
the club’s record to 9-10. Los Angeles is 46-19 (.708) overall since
then and 26-9 (.743) in its last 35 home games vs. the D-Backs.
Since the start of the 2014 campaign, the Dodgers are 90-40 (.692)
against the National League West, which is easily the best mark
by any MLB team against its own division in that span (second is
Washington: 84-47, .641). SOURCE: STATS, LLC
The Dodgers are having the best 84-game start to their season
since 1977, when the club went 56-28 through 84 contests, on its’
way to the NL pennant. Both the Dodgers and D-Backs are closing
the first half at a historic clip:
NL, Highest Combined Winning Pct. by Two Teams in a
Single Division Entering Fourth of July – Since 1969
1976 NL East Phi (51-21) & Pit (42-30) 93-51 (.646)
1970 NL West Cin (55-23) & LAD (45-32) 100-55 (.645)
2017 NL West LAD (55-29) & Ari (52-31) 107-60 (.641)
1986 NL East NYM (53-21) & Mon (41-34) 94-55 (.631)
1974 NL West LAD (54-25) & Cin (45-33) 99-58 (.631)

The Dodgers’ +153 run differential is the best in the Major
Leagues, 29 runs better than the Houston Astros (+124). The
club’s outstanding run differential is among the best in the history
of the game heading to the break:
NL, Best Run Differential Pre All-Star – Since 1933
1944 St. Louis Cardinals^ +159
1976 Cincinnati Reds^ +154
2017 Los Angeles Dodgers +153
1942 Brooklyn Dodgers +151
1975 Cincinnati Reds^ +151
1974 Los Angeles Dodgers +148
The Cardinals and Reds’ teams won the World Series, while the
1974 Dodgers took home the NL pennant. The 1942 club won 104
games and finished second in the NL to the Cardinals. SOURCE: STATS, LLC
CAN’T STOP SLUGGING: After recording the most home runs in a
calendar month with 53 homers in June, the Dodgers homered again Sunday,
a solo shot by Yasmani Grandal, his 11th of the season. The Dodgers, who
have hit home runs in 23 of their last 24 games since June 7, rank fourth in
the NL in home runs (119), trailing the Brewers (127), Nationals (124) and
Mets (123). The team has hit 54 homers in its last 24 games and is averaging
2.30 home runs per game during that span:

MILESTONE WATCH: Chase Utley drove in his 998th and 999th career
runs on Thursday and is just one RBI shy of plating 1,000 career runs. Utley
will become just the ninth active player to reach the 1,000-RBI milestone.
THE BEST IN BASEBALL: Clayton Kershaw will take the mound
tonight for his 18th start of the season as he looks to potentially become the
first 13-game winner in the Majors this season. The left-hander has made 11
consecutive starts without a loss and is 8-0 with a 2.16 ERA in his last 11
starts overall (all Dodger victories). Kershaw is 7-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 12
career starts against Arizona at Dodger Stadium.
The seven-time All-Star has not allowed a run in his last two starts,
giving him 75 career starts without allowing an earned run, the
most among active pitchers and, according to STATS, LLC, the
most since at least 1913 by a pitcher under 30 (Walter Johnson,
2nd—63).
LOTS OF WORK LEFT TO DO: Earlier today, Major League Baseball
announced its’ first Final Vote update and Dodger third baseman Justin
Turner has garnered more votes than any of the candidates, recording 6.7
million thus far. That’s just the first lap as Dodger fans have until 1 p.m. PT
on Thursday, July 6 to get the Major Leagues’ leading hitter into the 88th
All-Star Game in Miami. To vote for Turner, text N5 to 89269 up to 35 times
before balloting closes. Once that route has been exhausted, fans can vote an
unlimited number of times at mlb.com/vote. Remember to not only #VoteJT,
but also to spread some love to Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas and
#VoteMoose as the Dodgers and Royals have teamed up to send these to
Southern California boys to South Florida. Turner is leading the Majors
(min. 200 AB) with a .382 batting average and a .472 on-base percentage in
59 games and currently sits with the fifth highest batting average at the All-
Star Break since 1969, trailing just Larry Walker (.398, 1997), Tony Gwynn
(.394, 1997) Andres Galarraga (.391, 1993) and Gwynn (.383,1994).
On Thursday, the MLB All-Star Game Final Vote again will
include social balloting, as Twitter support from the 10
candidates’ fans over the last six hours of balloting will count
toward final totals. From 7 a.m. – 4 p.m PT. Every tweet that
includes the #VoteJT or #VoteMoose hashtag will be tabulated
as part of the official vote total used to determine the AL and NL
winners. The winners will be announced live on MLB Tonight on
the MLB Network and MLB.com at 3 p.m. PT. Thursday.
The 2017 T-Mobile Home Run Derby will be broadcast live at
5p.m. Monday on ESPN, Mlb.com, ESPN Deportes and the
ESPN App. The “Esurance All-Star Game will be shown on FOX
this Tuesday, July 11 and coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. PT.
THE FAB FOUR: Congratulations are in order to the four Dodger All-
Stars: Cody Bellinger, Kenley Jansen, Clayton Kershaw and Corey
Seager. All four were selected via player balloting, with Bellinger making
his first All-Star appearance, Jansen and Seager each making their second
and Kershaw making his seventh. This marks the third time in the last four
years that the Dodgers have had four or more All-Star representatives (also:
2014 and 2015) and were Turner to win the Final Vote, it would be the third
time in the last 12 years that the club would have five players participate in
the Midsummer Classic (1995 and 2015).
At 21 years, 354 days old, Bellinger becomes the youngest
position player to be honored as an All-Star in franchise history
(previous: Corey Seager: 22 years, 69 days) and the third-
youngest Dodger All-Star overall (at the time of their first
selection), behind only Fernando Valenzuela (20 years, 281
days in 1981) and Ralph Branca (21 years, 183 days in 1947).
Yesterday, he was named the National League Rookie of the
Month for the second consecutive month and is tied for the NL
lead in homers with 24. Bellinger will represent the Dodgers in
the T-Mobile Home Run Derby this Monday with his father,
former big leaguer Clay, acting as his pitcher.
Jansen will make his second consecutive All-Star appearance
and yesterday was named the NL Reliever of the Month,
presented by Hartford. The Dodgers’ all-time saves leader has
not allowed a run since May 21, a span of 15 games (17.0 IP).
Kershaw is the first Dodger to be named to seven consecutive All-
Star teams (2011-17) since Steve Garvey (1974-81), who made
eight consecutive appearances in the Midsummer Classic.
Kershaw is tied for the Major League lead in wins (12), while
ranking among the league leaders in innings pitched (116.1, 2nd),
ERA (2.32, 3rd) and WHIP (0.91, 2nd).
Seager, 23, will also make his second consecutive All-Star
appearance after leading NL shortstops in runs (57), doubles (21),
home runs (13), RBI (42) and walks (45) this season.
