DEFINITION OF EDUCATION

• This is the process of preparing oneself to meet the challenges of life through acquisition of relevant knowledge, skills and affections (attitudes), that will not only positively influence one’s destiny but also that of the society/environment.

• Education makes you useful to yourself and to your society.

• Learning on the other hand, is the acquisition of new knowledge. Anything that changes one’s experience is learning.

1.Basic Education – which provides the foundation for Tertiary Education which is its superstructure. The two are one in whole.

WHAT IS A TERTIARY INSTITUTION?

• A public or private Institution, college or centre of Higher Education other than a University, with the object to provide post secondary education offering courses study leading to the award of certificates or diplomas and conducting research and publishing

• Referred to as the THIRD LEVEL of education with Secondary Education as the SECOND and Primary Education as the FIRST.

TERTIARY AND UNIVERSITYA COMPARISON:

• Other Tertiary Institutions of Higher learning are designed for specific programmes and trades.

• The programmes offered here are vocational(skills and training needed for a particular job/profession) and, are, by nature, skills oriented(knowledge and ability to do something well).

• Graduates are easily employable - they put to use the knowledge discovered. This makes employing such graduates easy

(A) DIRECT ENTRY SCHEMEAdmission requirements are:

(i) Uganda Certificate of Education(UCE) (“O’’ Level) or its equivalent (with at least 5 subjects passed)

(ii) At least 2 principal passes obtained at the same sitting of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) (“A” Level).

(iii) “A” Level results are valid for Government sponsorship for 3 years only while for the AFTERNOON, EVENING, & EXTERNAL, programmes, there is no time limit.

B) DIPLOMA HOLDERS ENTRY SCHEME

I. Must have a Diploma from a recognized institution.

II. Applicant should have at least second class, credit or equivalent diploma in a relevant field.

III. Admission is based on performance in the Diploma examinations.

IV. Must have at least 5passes at O level and 1Principal Pass& 2 Subsidiaries at A level.

(C) MATURE AGE ENTRY SCHEMEi. Applicants should be 25 years of age and above by

August of the year of admission.

ii. Must sit and pass a Mature Age Entry National Aptitude Exam.

iii. Must sit and pass subject specific exam in the area of interest.

iv. Admission is based on performance in the Mature Age & Subject specific Examinations.

Competition gets stifferCombinations are tightened while the list is enlargedCandidates must pass well, the principal subjectsNo excuse of passing any two subjects like it has beenCut off points at university will lower to a maximum of 54.5

instead of 57.5 but competition will increase since every one will be judged on the same yardstick (3princ & 2 subs)

Public Universities will revise & adjust the requirements as may be necessary with few changes. Many course requirements will remain with only a few changes in programmes like Arch.
