Style: Surrealism with Cubism

• Chagall was famous for a modern style of art called “Fantastic Art” which is similar to Surrealism in its dreamlike quality. Chagall also mixes Cubism and imagination influenced by his childhood memories, folklore and country life.

• Often his paintings seem like dreams, with a young man looking very much like Chagall to be found in many of the paintings.

• He often posed himself and his wife in pictures as “observers of the world.”

writer. She was the

subject of many of Chagall's paintings including Bella with

White Collar in 1917.

• Born in Belarus, Russia, Marc’s name was really “Moishe Segal.”

• He was the oldest of 9 children in a close knit Jewish family.

• As a teenager, Marc Chagall left Russia to study art in Paris, France.

• In France, he worked each night until dawn!

• If a painting didn’t turn out the way he wanted it to, he would hurl it out the window and it would be taken away with the garbage!

• He and his family fled France during WWII to the United States, where he lived in New York. Chagall worked everyday of his life up to the age of 97.

• You will find symbols in his works. Look for herring that he depicted as flying fish, to represent his father’s work in a fish factory. Clocks represent time; trees represent life.

• Marc Chagall’s works can be seen in Lincoln Center in NYC, where huge mosaic murals hang in the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera House.

• The United Nations building also has a stained glass of his work.

Marc Chagall is often referred to as one of the three patriachs of French art, along with Picasso and Matisse.

The artist created the Chagall Museum in the 1970s, designed as a thematic display based on scenes from the Bible, intending to provide the public with a serene location in which to contemplate religion.

Chagall depicted biblical scenes on 17 massive canvases, focusing on the human side of each scene, setting his works apart from conservative religious paintings.
