Facts on Episcopal Church Growth*Major Findings/Contextual Factors Older suburbs and older residential areas are where most church

decline is happening. Parishes in these areas should not expect a steady supply of

newcomers. The Midwest is the worst region for church growth. There is a strong relationship between community growth and church

growth. Anglo churches are the least likely to grow. Congregations in which 75% of parishioners are 50 or older are the least

likely to grow. There is a positive correlation between the proportion of active female

participants and church decline. There is a strong correlation between clarity of mission and growth. Growth is unlikely in parishes that doubt their capacity for change.

Major Findings/Worship StyleChurch growth is correlated to parishes that

describe their worship as “joyful,” and “exciting,” (although this does not necessarily mean contemporary).

Worship styles described as “contemplative,” “disorganized,” “formal liturgy,” and “predictable” are associated with declining parishes.

Churches with more services and different styles of worship at each service are more likely to grow.

Churches with programs oriented around education, formation, and fellowship are more likely to grow.

Major Findings/OutreachPhone calls and visits to members,

newcomers, and visitors are positively associated with growth.

Church growth is correlated with active recruitment by a relatively large number of church members.

Major Findings/LeadershipFirst two years of a new priest’s tenure are

the worst for growth.The potential for growth increases over a

priest’s tenure, peaking in the 5th and 6th years, followed by decline and plateau above the valley of the first two years.

Leadership characteristics of church leaders associated with growth: generates enthusiasm, charismatic leader, clear vision for the congregation, knows how to get people to work together.

Other FindingsHaving a clear mission is strongly

associated with church growth.Conflict is the biggest factor associated

with church decline.
