“Mamma Mia”- Here We Go Again- Skopelos revisited…
They call Skopelos the island of ”Blue on Green”. The most verdant of
the Greek isles, most of it is covered in pine forest right down to the
turquoise water. Most of “Mamma Mia” was filmed here yet it remains
far less commercialised than you might expect. The Monastery of Ag.
Ioannis where the wedding scene takes place (actually too small to film
in) is every bit as stunning as in the film, set high on a rock with 192
steps leading up to it. We hired a car and visited some of the beautiful
beaches . We anchored again in the tiny secluded bay of Panormos
where Jan N. took a tumble from the dinghy tying us up to rocks but
thankfully was unhurt. (later we watched fireplanes tackling a blaze on
the forested hillsides above it).
We revisited Glossa, the tiny mountain village with stunning views and old houses with
wooden outhouses (WC) perched on their balconies and swallows nests underneath! Again
the Meltemi blew (up to 120 km /50 knots one night) so we stayed for some days in Skopleos
town but were happy to enjoy the lovely shops, quaint backstreets built up the hillside and
good restaurants under the giant chestnut trees. Here, too, Jan N. had a different experience
with a visit to a Greek dentist (inspiring his own version of “The Dentist Took It All”). We
also made it to the small island of Alonyssos (and up to the stunning hilltop town with
spectacular views) aboard a traditional Greek boat- a wonderful day out where 5 dolphins
played just metres from the boat for 10-15 mins. A fantastic end to a wonderful 3 weeks!
