Mrs. Warren(RTA Teacher) comes into the room and works with my 40% or lower students in my classroom. She

works with a group each day, except on Fridays. She uses the Intervention kit

with the groups.

I work with my students using the Literacy Footprints Leveled Readers for 15 minutes each day, except for

Fridays. I also use different strategies provided on each Literacy Footprints

card. Examples: Building words, finding high frequency words, dictating sentences, finding syllables, etc.

Mrs. Lynn(my assistant) uses the Journey’s(Reading Series)Leveled

Readers for small groups.

Rhyming/ Word Families

Matching games and puzzles are used.

Rainbow writing rhyming/ Word family

words are done on Thursdays during Reading Groups.

Making words sheet using magnetic letters

and/or playdough is used during Reading

Groups.

The students play “Go Fish” with letter cards using uppercase and lowercase letters.

The students make CVC words using magnetic letters, as well as Spelling Tests.

Writing

The students are taught the correct formation of letters to align with the

standards.

The students form their letters of the week on the table or the white board during Guided

Reading groups.

The students write on one another’s backs using the correct formation from Jan Richardson during

whole group.

Mrs. Warren(RTA Teacher) uses the ABC

book from “Literacy Footprints.”

High Frequency Words

Level A, Level B, and Level C words are in Reading

Folders and are sent home each Monday. (Level D and

E words for the Higher Level).

Sight Word/ High Frequency Words Activity Sheets are sent home for

homework each week.

When students are finished with their work, then they can get their journals and

write High Frequency words in them.

“Go Fish” with High Frequency Words is used during Reading Groups.

Every other week students took home books that

focused on High Frequency Words at their level. The

books used are from our old Reading Series.

“Follow the Path” -The students use dinosaurs and dice. The students are to

hop the correct number of times to the high frequency

word, then say the word.

Major Successes

At our December IREADY in my class of 16 students I had 6 Distinguished, 5 Proficient, 2

Apprentice, and 3 Novice. The 3 Novice are going to be retained or they are going to be referred for

Special Education.

High Frequency Words- 9 on or above Grade Level; 6 1 Grade Level or Above; 1 2 or more grade levels

or below.

Phonics- 10 on or above Grade Level; 5 1 Grade

Level or Below; 1 student 2 or more Grade Levels

below.

All students, but three were reading at a Level B or Higher by beginning of

March.

All students knew their letters and sounds by the

beginning of March.

Challenges

There wasn’t enough time in the day or this year.

There wasn’t enough data taken/graphed.

There was too much focus on High Frequency Words, but not enough focus on Phonics activities.

There wasn’t enough proof/pictures of what was completed in the classroom.

IREADY Lessons weren’t used.

I didn’t differentiate High Frequency Words for activity sheet homework.

The final IREADY test is not given again until May(more than likely not at all due to the circumstances).

The ABC Book used to help improve the forming of letters wasn’t used enough. Students might have done better when forming their letters in their everyday work, as well as writing activities.

Ideas for Next Year

Sending differentiated High Frequency activity sheets home.

Making sure to have my assistant do Reading Groups with the Journey’s Leveled Readers, as well as High Frequency Word games.

Providing more time with the ABC Book and other strategies to help my students form their letters correctly.

Continue using Literacy Footprints.

Finding the appropriate time of the year to add new words to my highfrequency word wall.

Having students not only add high frequency words to their journal, but also write sentences with their new words.

Focus more on Phonics strategies.

More data is taken and graphed to show improvements.
