Maine & Boston Fall TripOctober 7-13, 2010

This year we logged 1,240 miles on our rental car! Since we visited the most northwestern point in the United States last year in Cape Flattery, Washington, we just had to visit the easternmost point this year in Lubec, Maine! We really had great weather the entire trip. Mostly blue skies, temps in the low 60's, but no fog (that would have been cool)! Our coldest moment by far was atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. A freeze warning had been issued the night before our planned sunrise outing. We knew that watching the first sunrise in the entire United States, at an elevation over 1500 feet, might be kind of chilly. The wind was unbearable up there and it took a while for us to feel our fingers and toes again.

Although we were using a GPS, we had a few wrong turns and frustrations here and there. Nothing that we couldn't correct quickly, but the mountains around Acadia are somewhat confusing! We had another map mishap in Kennebunkport. We parked the car and decided to walk to Walker's Point. It sure didn't look far on the cartoon map. Instead of heading back the way we came, we decided to loop and see a little more of the area. Big mistake! We ended up walking through residential area, up and down hills, no sidewalks and it took twice as long to get back! Due to our 5 mile journey, we hardly saw Kennebunkport, as we now had to race the setting sun to see the Nubble Lighthouse over in Cape Neddick. We barely made it! That same evening, we had our last crazy adventure of getting lost. I used Boston as the city, when I should have put Revere. All was fine until we were on the wrong side of Boston in a neighborhood called Roxbury. We were in a very bad neighborhood and no hotel! We obviously called the hotel and fixed our location and all ended well. However, I would have preferred to never see that side of Boston.

Food! Oh the glorious food! From lobster rolls, Thai food, and even pizza! Everything was delicious. Don't forget the apples we picked back in Bridgton, Maine on the 2nd day of our trip! I love that the weather is cool and you can leave food in the car and it stays fresh! One great stop on our trip was at the Maine Diner in Wells, Maine (as seen on Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives). The food was amazing and the live webcam allowed our kids and husbands to see us live on our vacation! This trip goes down as another amazing fall trip!
