WELCOME WELCOME TO THE FIRST INDOOR CRICKET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, COMBINING BOTH THE AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR AND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS, AT THE INDOOR SPORTS ARENA MACKAY, IN NORTH QUEENSLAND.
This year’s event will see the country’s best junior and open age players competing for the title of National Champions across two full weeks of action packed indoor cricket. We’ve seen the competition grow significantly this year, with a record 40 teams competing in the junior age divisions during the first week of competition, followed by 27 teams competing in the second week. In combining the two events, we will see several of the junior players being able to watch their State and Territory open teammates go into battle, showcasing the player pathway opportunities that are available to them in the years to come.
Already this year, we have seen the launch of the Beastwear National Indoor Cricket League (NICL) with many National and International events still to come. Ahead, we have the NICL Finals Series in Melbourne, followed by a WICF World Cup in Dubai, a Masters Trans-Tasman Series in NZ, as well as Junior World Series in 2018, which will see the next wave of Australian players seeking an opportunity to impress.
Now in it’s second year, Cricket Australia will again acknowledge a small select number of people with the
honour of being inducted in to the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame at the Championships Presentation Function.
A huge thank you must go to the Mackay Regional Council for their support of indoor cricket for the second year running, as well as our Championship sponsors, the Australian Sports Commission and Burley Sekem. Thank you also to Indoor Sports Arena Mackay, Queensland Cricket, Tournament Director Mr David Shepley and the many volunteers who have made this event possible.
Please make sure you visit the CA Indoor Facebook page and indoor cricket website.indoor.cricket.com.au to view the live streaming of the final two days of each week of competition which will include all the Preliminary Finals and Grand Finals.
Finally, to the players, support staff and officials who will no doubt represent their States and Territories with a great deal of pride, we wish you all the best and trust you enjoy some hard fought indoor cricket, played in good spirit.
Briana Binch CA Indoor Cricket Manager
1INDOOR CRICKET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
2017 INDOOR CRICKET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.It is my honour to be able to issue this welcome to competitors, supporters and families to Mackay for the 2017 National Championships. We are very pleased to have you here in our region.
Last year we hosted the Australian Masters Championships, which was incredibly successful and was a key factor in securing this event. We also hosted the National Championships of Indoor Netball at this venue last year. It all adds to our goal of being the go-to place for sport when you want to get out of a capital city.
The 2017 Indoor Cricket National Championships provides players with an opportunity to test their abilities at the top level in the nation. It is also exciting that, in a first for Cricket Australia, this year’s national championships will feature the junior and open-age groups. A special welcome to those teams.
At the end of this tournament, national sides will be selected for the 2017 Indoor Cricket World Cup in Dubai later this year, so we will look forward to seeing the standard of play that will result in selection for a World Cup side.
Have a great tournament, enjoy your stay in the Mackay region, and if possible get out and see the sights in our fantastic valley or on one of our 31 beaches. We will make you very welcome.
Mackay Regional Council Mayor Cr. Greg Williamson

2017LORD’S TAVERNERS SHIELD
The 2017 Lord’s Taverners Shield represents the 25th year of this event. The Australian Indoor Cricket Federation (AICF) was the first National Sporting Organisation to fully embrace the concept of inclusion and include an event for players with an intellectual disability alongside their National Open event.
Sport Inclusion Australia, formerly AUSRAPID, negotiated and worked with the AICF in 1992/93 to plan the first national event for players with an intellectual disability. Sport Inclusion Australia strongly encouraged the AICF to play this alongside a mainstream event within its National Carnival. The inaugural event took play at the Knox centre in Victoria in 1993 with Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia represented.
Following the success of this event, Sport Inclusion Australia met with The Lord’s Taverners Australia personnel to discuss a possible relationship and a 24 year partnership and sponsorship of the Lord’s Taverners Shield has ensued. The Lord’s Taverners Australia and branches have continued the sponsorship for over 24 years and it totals in excess of $590,000. Over the course of the Lord’s Taverners Shield this sponsorship has helped
the lives of a staggering 380 young men and 7 women with an intellectual disability. The Lord’s Taverners community are to be commended for their unwavering support in making sport accessible to all Australians.
At the same time, Sport Inclusion Australian Member Organisations have worked extremely hard at State level with State Indoor Cricket bodies to ensure teams were selected and prepared for the Event – every State/Territory have been represented at this event at some stage in its 25 year history. It is also important to note that players must meet Sport Inclusion Australia eligibility criteria for determining intellectual disability.
The AICF, now Cricket Australia, has been fantastic in their ongoing support of the event for the past 25 years and Sport Inclusion Australia has showcased the Lord’s Taverners Shield (Indoor Cricket) model to initiate many other national events – Ivor Burge Championships, Australian Tennis Championships, Australian Open to name a few.
These events and successful programs have been the catalyst behind other National Sport becoming more inclusive.
