personal Poetry or

Lyrical Poetry

This kind of poetry is a direct

record of personal

experience and feelings of the

poet.

The poet speaks in his own voice

Kinds of Lyrical Poetry:

• Lyrics•Sonnets•Odes•Elegy

Lyrics are short poems on any

subject that record an outburst of

feeling inspired by something immediate

• Lyrics don’t have a specific structure• They are the

spontaneity of the emotion expressed

Sonnets :are a type of

lyrical poetry but are written in a

specific form

The sonnet is 14 lines of iambic

pentameter that discuss one idea

Iambic pentameter: a line of verse that has five syllables

unstressed syllable followed by a

stressed syllable

Kinds of Sonnets

Italian sonnet• Italian sonnets are

consist of 2 parts: • Part 1 : is called an

octave and consists of 8 lines

• Part 2: is called a sestet and consist of 6 lines

English Sonnet• The English sonnet

is also known as the Shakespearian sonnet and consist of 3 quatrains and a couplet

Odes: are lyrical poems with irregular meter

that describe or celebrate a special

event

Odes can be short or long but

usually tend to be lengthy

John Keats’ Odes are widely read in

English literature for example:

an Ode to a Nightingale and Ode to Autumn

Elegy:is a lyrical poem that lament the death of

someone. ( a death song)

2 Kinds of Elegies

Plain Elegy• is a poem that

expresses the feelings of grief on the death of someone

• For example: Ben Johnson’s On My Son

Pastoral Elegy• is also a lament but in

fiction. The poem describe the life of the dead person as a shepherd or a shepherdess in a country life

• Example: Shelly’s Adonais
