Luke 6:12-16Luke 6:12-16

The Twelve Apostles

At about that same time he climbed a mountain to pray. He was there all night in prayer before God. The next day he summoned his disciples; from them he selected twelve he designated as apostles:

Luke 6:12-16 (Message)

Simon, whom he named Peter, Andrew, his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, Simon, called the Zealot, Judas, son of James, Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Apostles and Ambassadors are so very similar

It’s not necessary to travel abroad to be a full-fledged missionary/ambassador

I’m on a team which is diverse, called and with few similarities but our response to God’s call

Will I be faithful to my calling?

Jesus Assembles The ‘Dream Team’

He spends the night in prayer about this profound decision…narrowing the field to 12

From his many disciples a Dubious Dozen make The Team

As in the other three lists of Apostles found in the scriptures, Peter is named first and Judas drags up the rear

They had few common interests and covered the full social spectrum from Far Right (Simon the Zealot) to that Tax Collector (Matthew)

Jesus was their common denominator

These Guys Don’t Know Where Jesus Will Lead Them. They Simply Sign On To Follow

This sounds a lot like Abraham’s call…and ours

They’ll spend three years as apprentices and then be shoved out of the nest

Little do they know that they’ll all die violent deaths, expect geriatric John

Graduating From ‘Boot Camp’ They’ll Be Entrusted With The Task Of Telling The Greatest

Story Ever Told --and Starting Churches

The Book of Acts details the ministry of the two most prominent Apostles…Peter (1-12) and Paul (13-28)

Empowered by the Holy Spirit and spurred on by witnessing the Resurrected Christ, they are unstoppable

They have supernatural powers to bestow spiritual gifts on other Christians and perform amazing miracles themselves

All Christians (Like Us) Are Indwelt By The Holy Spirit And Have Been Called To Pass On ‘The

Story’ --II Corinthians 5:17-20

Although we didn’t walk those Palestinian roads with Jesus and watch him perform miracles (or see him dead, then alive) we have been touched by him, transformed and called to follow.

They were told “as you are going” make disciples.(Matthew 28:18-20)

We are to be disciple-makers also…wherever life leads us

How Is God Sending You? Who Is On Your Daily Path?

Family Co-workers Neighbors Friends

IT’S NOT A GIANT STEP FROM APOSTLE TO AMBASSADOR

We don’t seek the office of Apostle but believers were commissioned Ambassadors at our baptism

The whole matter seems to be Faithful in well-doing

You’ll find your ministry as you practice consistent Faithfulness

Doors will open, needs will present themselves and you’ll find see confused people all about you

Am I Willing To Be God’s Representative And Ambassador

What would that look like?

“As you are going” you’ll need God’s glasses

Don’t bury your treasure or hide your light

Utilize your talent for Heaven’s sake

Great Opportunities abound…right at your doorstep

I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

I trust him as my Lord and Savior.
