Location of the Parathyroid Gland

The Parathyroid gland is located in the neck of humans, on the back of the Thyroid gland!!!!!!!

Hormones of the Parathyroid GlandThe parathyroid gland produces Parathyroid

hormones, or PTH!!!!PTH regulates calcium levels in the blood, by

increasing the levels when they are too low through the kidney, bones, and intestines!!!!!

Why these hormones are important to HomeostasisPTH helps maintain homeostasis by

activating Vitamin D in the Kidneys, which increases the absorption of calcium by the intestines which increases blood calcium level!!!! This process helps maintain homeostasis of calcium in the body!!!!

Feedback mechanisms and Antagonistic hormones The antagonistic hormone of PTH is

Calcitonin, which is produced by the Thyroid and counteracts the effects of PTH!!!!!

Feedback mechanism: as Calcium levels go down, PTH rises! This raises the Calcium level, which leads to a drop in PTH!!!

Releasing and release inhibiting glands and hormonesThe Parathyroid Gland releases the hormone

PTH! The Thyroid releases Calcitonin to inhibit the release of PTH!

Problems of the ParathyroidWhen and if the Parathyroid gland stops

working, the amount of calcium will decrease in the intestines and the amount of the Calcium in the blood will increase….

Can the gland malfunction?Sometimes the glad will produce to much

PTH, causing Hypercalcaemia.. If to much of this hormone is in the body for a

long period of time, it can cause the bones to become thin and/or spongy…… . ..
