Confront results of theoretical studies on French nominalizations in -age and -ment based on dictionaries to real data.
Examine noun pairs in -age and -ment derived from the same verb, where one member is attested in French contemporary dictionaries, and the other one only present on the Internet .
(Dal & al, 2004)
Paradigmo. 20th June 2017 2
Theoretical studies (essentially) based on dictionaries
Presupposition:
-age and -ment are phonological manifestations of different
morphosyntactic property-sets. If there are two different
exponents, the Lexeme Formation Rules they belong to must
be different => “Fixed meaning model” (Fradin, 2016).
3Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Type of bases:
Transitivity (Dubois, 1962; Lüdtke, 1978)
Transitive verbs: suffixation in -age.
Intransitive, reflexive or passivized verbs: suffixation in -ment.
Argument structure and proto-agentivity (Kelling, 2001, 2003, 2004)
Verbs with prototypical agent (Dowty, 1991): suffixation in -age.
Proto-agent criteria partially or not fulfilled: suffixation in -ment.
4Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Semantics (Martin, 2010)
“Length of the eventive chain”
Semantically complex event: suffixation in -age.
Simpler semantic content: suffixation in -ment.
5Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Aspectual value of the verbal base (Martin, 2010)
No clear correlation.
6Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Multi-feature analysis (Martin, 2010)
Length of the eventive chain
Degree of agentivity of the subject
Incremental relation between the event and the Theme
Ontological domain to which the denotive eventive chain pertains
7Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Trends, but not absolute distinctions: -ment attached to transitive and agentive verbs and denoting actions:
pavement [pavement] “Action de paver” (TLF)
Le duc de Berri (...) fit venir d'Espagne un potier appelé Jean de Valence pour exécuter le pavement de son palais de Poitiers
-age attached to inaccusative verbs and denoting states:
ébouriffage [hairiness /ruffling]: “ Le fait d'être ébouriffé” (TLF)
Et le velours du veston, brillant et nacré, avait çà et là quelque chose de hérissé, de déchiqueté et de velu qui faisait penser à l'ébouriffage des œillets dans le vase
8Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Existence of “true doublets” (Fradin, 2016):(l’écorcage / l’écorcement) des troncs `the barking of trunks'(l’élaguage / l’élaguement) des arbres `the pruning of trees'(le percage / le percement) des cloisons `the drilling of partition walls‘
No (systematic) blocking, if any, between individuals and patterns
9Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
To what extent do neologisms in -age or -ment verify the constraints established in the literature?
Xment/Xage pairs, where one noun is longtime stored in dictionaries, and the other had been found only online
Competition between patterns (Aronoff, 2016):
affix extinction or unbalanced coexistence due to "niches"
general dominance of one pattern over the other
Paradigmo. 20th June 2017 10
How is pattern competition between Xage and Xmentmotivated?
Is there a clear-cut distribution of roles?
What drives speakers in the choice of Xment or Xage?
Are -age and -ment the exponents of two different LexemeFormation Rules?
11Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
5000 Xment Xage nouns found online and absent from the TLF (WesConVA project: Dal & al., 2004)
No quantitative preference for -age or -ment. Comparable productivity (at least, availability): Equally represented among verb-based event nouns : neither -age nor
-ment is more frequently used
Equally available for the coinage of new nouns : neither -age nor -ment isnewer

In a Xage/Xment pair:
Xage can be agentive, and Xment selects a patient argument, or the other way round
▪ Both can select an agent argument
Xage can denote an event, and Xment a result, or the otherway round
▪ They can share the same aspectual value
30Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Xage can belong to a given specialised domain, Xment to another one.
▪ But both can be perfectly synonymous, and be used in the general language, or in a specialised field
Nonce formations are coined within the Xage pattern, or the Xmentpattern.
Is there really something specific to the Xage and Xmentpatterns?
31Paradigmo. 20th June 2017
Xment and Xage do not fit the Aronoff’s criteria of "pattern competition":
Constraints are not in complementary distribution
Pattern instantiations are not mutually exclusive
No niches
Rather: compatible suffixation models, both available withthe same verb base, and striving toward the same derivationaleffect
Paradigmo. 20th June 2017 32
Both Xage Xment models are better accounted for from a paradigmatic perspective
Xsuf1 <--> Xsuf2 unoriented complementarity relation with"niche sharing"
Bi-exponent pattern: covering the set of relevant text types, included the general
language
accounting for alternating event/result aspectual values, and/or agent/patient argument
used to create (playful) nonce-formations
Paradigmo. 20th June 2017 33
In short, Xage/Xment is in French a derivational paradigmensuring that nominalizations can access the largestavailable panel in terms of aspect, argument structure, language register and context.
Paradigmo. 20th June 2017 34
Theoretical results do not resist to real data: No complementarity between the two suffixations, but, at the
very best, trends that suffer frequent and large overlaps. « Fixed semantic model » contradicted by the analysis of the
data reported here: suffixations in -age and -ment both act as events and results.
