Learning Layers Objectives

• Understand how informal learning takes place in and between SMEs (GP Practices in the UK pilot study)

• Identify potential for technology tools to support this learning

• Co-design, develop and pilot these tools – Improve tools, provide evidence of impact– Test and refine learning theories (Design Based Research)

Bits and Pieces:Record/collect, organise, share and collaborate

on informal learning & resources

• Tool Supports - affordances• Easy collection of learning triggers, reflections, experiences, materials • Cue based support to remember and find gathered material/resources• Visual support for sensemaking (organisation, reflection, development)

Results

15

We found initial evidence that deeper elaboration of experiences during collection (reflection) facilitates remembering via semantic cues, while more shallow elaboration requires later re-evaluation of the collected experiences.

Healthcare professionals valued the collection, visualisation and collaboration affordances.

Next step: Long time pilot with GP Practice staff to support individual and team-based informal learning at the workplace
