Local Economy Seneca County is based mostly of business that

employ 1-4 people. This creates fewer opportunities to get a job in Seneca

County. This Causes more of the population to leave the

county for a good job. Because of the small opportunity for employment, less

people are coming into Seneca County for a job. The major employment sectors from smallest to

largest are: Retail Trade (19%), All other (17%), Manufacturing (16%), Local Government (15%), and Health Care/Social Assistance (12%)

THIS ALL CAUSES…

other counties People are afraid to open a self-owned business Local Businesses that stay employ few people Most college/high school grads. leave county but most

dropouts stay People have to drive far distances to get to jobs or places of

interest House values decline increasingly Majority of houses are low income Only population increasing is prison population. Schools close/combine in the future because of decreased

attendance

Who are your potential employees?

Adults would be needed for jobs that are not legal for teens (cook)

Teens would be the main employees and would shadow managers although there will be adult managers.

How will you reach your potential customers?

Grand Opening Sale School Finger Lakes Radio Group Newspaper Such as Ovid Gazette,

Finger Lakes Times, etc. Internet services such as Myspace,

Facebook, and Fingerlakes1.com

Where will you get the financial resources to start your business?

Bank Loan Business Loan Possible franchising Small business grant Workforce Development (we will go

more indepth on the next slide)

How will Workforce Development help our project? Chris Brown of Workforce Development

specializing in small business said, “What a wonderful opportunity.” Also he said, “I know that related projects have been done elsewhere.”

Workforce Development could provide the adult employees so we could focus on perfecting the hands on experience that the teens would be experiencing.

Also if we go through Workforce Development then we can possibly receive small business grants and other funding opportunities.

Are we prepared to make a sacrifice?

Yes! Students, especially now, are trying to save money for college

Working at the business would be a hands on learning experience

It would be fun and you serve your friends

Will you run your business everyday or just sometimes?

Ideally it would be open seven days a week

Depends on the clientele and the owner.

Schedule would change with the school year and the seasons

Will running your business effect your school?

The business might decrease the local attendance of after school activities.

Providing these opportunities would increase the sense of responsibility

This would use the 40 developmental assets that the Search Institute identified as the building blocks for a young person’s healthy development

What is our teams motivation?

We believe in Seneca County We hope that youth will have a future We want to see Seneca County

prosper and to be “put back on it’s feet”
