GUIDED READING

Children read in a small group with their teacher at least once a week. The teacher will listen to each person in the group and the whole group will discuss the text.

We might discuss:

Why did the author choose to use to use a particular word?

What do we think is going to happen next?

Why a page is set out in a particular way.

Everybody Reads In ClassReading is the most important skill to

develop, so we all have daily opportunities to read books of our own choice, and to practice

with an adult if we find reading difficult.

WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO READ FOR PLEASURE.

WRITING FOR A PURPOSE

We were asked to enter a poetry competition by Fairfield and Woodlands Care Home around the theme of Grandparents. The residents presented

the children with prizes for the best entries.

BRIAN MOSESBrian Moses came and

read poetry to us. Some of us were lucky enough to

do some writing with him, then we taught other

children in our classes how to write poems like

ours.

We didn’t see goblins in Goblin Mines,But we saw where the goblins had been.

We saw rotten, green skin on the jagged grey rocks,That must have belonged to a tiny, emerald being.

We discovered yellow mossy boneswith gnaw marks engraved in to them

by small, razor-sharp teeth.

We saw rusty, ancient pickaxesHanging on the stone grey walls.

We found crudely carved statues with gems encrusted in to them.

We didn’t find goblins in Goblin Mines,But this was the closest we’d been.
