Skills for LifeESOL (English for speakers of other languages)
We run a variety of ESOL classes, from ESOL for
Childcare to generic ESOL classes from Pre-entry to
Level 1. Newham Adult Learning Service (NALS) also
runs Non-literate ESOL classes for people who have
never learnt to read or right in their first language.
There are also themed courses to help you into the
world of employment:
• ESOL for employment
• ESOL for retail
• ESOL for Customer Service
Our generic courses have both Citizenship and
employability skills embedded into their delivery and
are accredited from Entry level 1 upwards.
All the courses are part-time, and are offered during
the day and in the evenings at centres across the
whole borough. Before starting any ESOL class,
learners will be assessed to identify their skill needs
and placed in the most appropriate class for them.
ESOL courses are free.
English & Maths
If you need to learn or brush-up your English skills
such as reading and writing or Maths, then these are
the courses for you. They are FREE at all levels from
Pre-entry to Level 2. NALS run part-time courses in the
daytime and evening throughout the borough. You can
choose the course at the right level for you. Learning at
your own pace, Functional Skills courses
can be taken over 24 weeks. These include L1 & L2,
which are GCSE equivalents and accepted by many
Further and Higher educational establishments and
businesses. If you are not ready for Functional Skills,
why not try one of our ‘First Steps’ courses in 12-weeks
to prepare you for Functional Skills.
The skills that you will gain on our courses can not only
help you in everyday life, but can also help you find a
job. Some of our courses are geared towards
employment and this might be just the stepping stone
you are looking for. Alternatively, you could join a more
relaxed course such as ‘Writing for fun’.
When you enrol for a course you will have a
confidential interview and an assessment to find your
current level, then discuss and plan what you would
like to work on and identify your skill needs. For those
with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, we can offer
additional support.

ESOL, English and Maths

Learning Service (NALS)
