Map of Libya

•Libya is located in northern Africa, with Egypt to the East, Chad and Niger to the South, Tunisia and Algeria to the West, and the Mediterranean Sea to the North.

Authority•Muammar Gaddafi gained rule of Libya in 1969

•August 23rd

2011 Gaddafi was forced out of all government positions

•On October 20th 2011, Libyan rebels captured, killed, and paraded his body ending the revolution

Libyan Rebels•Most of Libya’s population joined the revolution•All ages participated, including the youth•They were mainly Muslims•Both males and females were invovled

Gaddafi’s Resistance • Gaddafi hired mercenaries to guard

him• They would kill anyone who resisted • He also surrounded himself with

civilians to prevent airstrikes from rebels and N.A.T.O

Similarities of the Libyan and American

Revolutions• The colonists and the Libyan rebels

were both aided by foreign nations• Both the colonists and the rebels

over threw tyrannical leaders/ nations

• Both regimes wanted a new form of government

DifferencesLibyan Revolt

• Civil War- fought against leader of same nation

• Wanted new leader• Fought for 8 months• Few major leaders

American Revolution• Revolution- fought

against mother land• Wanted

independence• Fought for 8 years• Many major leaders

(ex George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison)

Libya’s Future?• Free to setup new government providing a

safer future• But they are very unorganized at the

moment, making a new government more difficult

• Foreign oil dependencies will help grow their economy

• Free of Gaddafi’s forces• Sadly they are under a military rule
