What we have done
Why we believe in this change
What we want from you
There is no one design that will work best for everyone. We have made every effort when begin-ning the design of this project to gain user feed-back. What is presented now is the final proposal developed from research and feedback from almost 300 library users. Input and advice has been provided by Nicki Moen a Library and Community Planning Consultant and Designer Kevin Russ from Creative Spaces, as well as the library staff’s ideas. The design that we have presented is a combination of each contributor’s ideas.
The Library has already begun changes to mod-ernise, Phase 1 involved the installation of a state of the art RFID self check system. We are now in Phase 2 which proposes changes to the layout across the whole library. It is financially prudent to make the changes to the Library and install RFID at the same time. It has also been just under 30 years since the library has had a change. The upgrade of Esk Street and other modifications to the CBD were also considered in the design of this space and timing of the project.
• The Library is a community space
• Changes offer balanced benefits amongst the entire community
• We can offer more children’s activities through the new design
• It will increase use of the children’s space and result in a safer area
• Increase in teen use
• The new space will encourage people to be in the CBD area
• Offer more space for community and school visits
• New design creates space for people to use technology
• We have not changed the library since 1989, that’s 27 years
We know that our library is something people are passionate about and that all users have differ-ent ways they like to interact with the space. As a library our first priority is to offer a space that en-courages people to use our services and resources, a public space that offers something for everyone. Over time how we learn and read has changed and peoples needs have changed. A great library must stay current to provide for the needs of a changing and aging population in Invercargill.
If you feel that we are on the right track with making this happen, or you feel we have gone
terribly wrong, please let us know so we can con-sider this before beginning the changes anticipated for January 2017. To give us feedback please visit www.icc.govt.nz/public-documents/consultation, email us at policy@icc.govt.nz, fill out the feedback form attached and post to Private Bag 90104, Invercargill 9840 or drop into the Help Desk at the Civic Administration Building, 101 Esk Street. You can also leave your feedback with a librarian or in one of the boxes at the library. Remember to return your comments no later than Friday 22 July 2016.

Technology Space
Children’s Space
Easily accessible from the lobby.
Technology spaces available that allow people to put into practice things they have researched and can implement, for example 3D printing, pod-casting and music production.
Better division of space for kids to use. A safer space for parents with younger children. Space designed for more interactive sessions.
Activity AreasSpaces to host means we can cater for larger numbers of children’s and adult activities. It also gives more space to host authors, acts from the Arts Festival and Buskers Festival, as well as to celebrate special events like Matariki.
