Christmas
Drop in Day
***** Volunteers this is your day don’t miss out! *****
It gives me great pleasure to introduce and welcome the newest member of our Staff Team,
Phil Houston who joined us in September 2016. Phil, formerly
Deputy Chief Executive at Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs,
comes to us with a wealth of experience in working with volunteers,
fundraising, liaising with County, District, & Parish Councils and
administration skills. Phil is extremely well-known throughout the
Volunteer Sector in Northamptonshire which I am sure will help to
further develop DACT services in the future. He has a great sense of
humour (well after all he does support Liverpool FC!) and has quickly
settled into life here at DACT and building up good relationships
with our staff, the volunteers and passengers.
I have a bit of an advantage over others as I’ve known Phil since he was just a boy in short trousers!
This is a major strengthening of the Team to help us as we further expand the services to our communities
throughout Daventry District. Phil is a very positive character and already has the right attitude for his
role at DACT, being a “can do” sort of person who will always try to find solutions to problems. We wish
Phil the very best for his future here as he embarks on a very steep, but exciting learning curve of all
things ‘DACT’.
I take this opportunity to wish every one of our readers a very happy, peaceful, Christmas and trust that
for you it will be not only be time for receiving, but a blessed time for giving as well. Each one of us can
make a positive difference to someone else. Our volunteers are doing this every day of the year for which
we can all be truly grateful. Why not try it!
One family realised the difference DACT Days Out makes to their Mum’s
social life and bought DACT Days out trips for her as a Christmas Present. So
don’t be lonely come and join in. Register with DACT Days Out to receive
your copy of the timetable of trips. Get active, meet friends, socialise and do
something different to your everyday routine. It’s nice just to be with others
and to get out and about. The DACT Days Out crowd are very friendly; if you
come on your own you are made to feel very welcome and regulars on the trips
make sure you're not on your own for long. Give it a go you’ll wonder why you
haven't done it before. It’s great to have something to look forward to. Just
give us a ring to register free and become part of DACT Days Out Club.

DACT DRIVERS FITNESS TO DRIVE DACT NEEDS TO KNOW:
● are fit to drive at all times
● do not drive when affected by alcohol, drugs or medicines
● do not drive when affected by illness
● do not drive when you are too tired to do so safely.
It is a requirement of DACT that you should inform your us about any health issue or personal
circumstances that may affect your driving. You are also legally
required to inform the DVLA of any medical condition that may affect your ability to drive safely.
A buyer’s guide to mobility scooters For those with restricted mobility, electric scooters can offer that vital increase in freedom and quality of
life. They can provide a safe, easy means of travelling to the local shop or visiting nearby friends and
relatives.
There are a number of important factors to consider prior to purchasing a scooter. Some of the most
crucial points are listed below:
Where will you keep the scooter? Are you able to take it into your home?
Do you have somewhere outside to store it?
Do you have any steps or barriers between the road/street and your home?
N.B. Your local authority is very unlikely to assist you with facilities such as a ramp or scooter shed.
Wherever you plan to store your scooter, are there facilities to charge it?
What type of terrain do you plan to travel over in your scooter?
What sort of distance do you wish to travel? (Think in terms of total distance i.e. there and back)
Are you physically fit enough to drive? Is your eye sight good enough to drive?
Insurance is not mandatory but advisable.
There are two different classifications of electric scooter
Class 2 scooters are designed to be used on the pavement. They have a maximum
speed of 4 mph. These also include travel scooters.
Class 3 scooters can be used on the road. Some travel up to 6mph with the majority having a maximum
speed of 8mph. They have a higher specification than the class 2, for example they have lights, mirrors,
etc. They tend to be larger vehicles and are less easy to dismantle for transportation. Their batteries are
bigger and therefore they are able to travel greater distances. Class 3 vehicles have to be registered with
the DVLA.
DACT have a wide variety of Class 2, Class 3, 3 wheeled and 4 wheeled scooters available to rent
and to buy at competitive prices at our DACT Mobility shop in Daventry Town Centre, you can
test drive different vehicles to find the one that suits you. If you want more information on the
specific models of mobility scooter or for Information on booking your scooter in for a service you can
contact us on 01327 312555 and talk to us about your needs.
We also offer various accessories e.g. stick holders, oxygen holders, capes and waterproof covers.
After Care
We have full time Technicians who will safety check vehicles, programme them if required, as well as
deliver and demonstrate them. Should any problem arise with your vehicle whilst it is under guarantee, a
Technician will visit promptly to resolve the situation.

Don’t forget Tesco Car Park

Christmas is fast approaching and as we begin to reflect on yet another year that has flown by I think of
family and friends, several milestone birthdays as well as new arrivals, how fast my daughter is growing
and wondering where the past 4 years have gone. Also, I think of my ‘job’ - I use the word ‘job’ but it is
far more than that; such is the unique environment, I enjoy coming to work. So, who makes it enjoyable?
The car passengers who share their stories with me, the DACT Days Out passengers that call to say what
an excellent trip they’ve had and also the passengers who would struggle to get to appointments or even
leave the house without DACT. All this is possible thanks to our amazing volunteers that give their time to
help. On several occasions volunteers come into the office and say ‘I don’t know how you manage to
organise the number of journey’s we are asked to do’. The fact is that without the volunteers, DACT
couldn’t operate this service. So I’d like to wish all of our wonderful volunteers and passengers a great
Christmas and a Happy New Year. Martyn Wood Transport Booking Officer

Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a
bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says: 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and
I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?'
Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.'
'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?'
'Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating,
the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.
The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant
and it was really great... I would recommend it very highly.'
The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?'
The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What is the name of that flower you
give to someone you love?
You know... The one that's red and has thorns.'
'Do you mean a rose?'
'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled,
'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'
I love this one! Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who
insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.
On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'
Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to
help them remember…
Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'
'Sure..'
'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.
'No, I can remember it.'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?'
He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'
'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.
Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'
Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, The old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.. She stares at the plate for a moment.
'Where's my toast ?'
A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy:
'So I hear you're getting married?'
'Yep!'
'Do I know her?'
'Nope!'
'This woman, is she good looking?'
'Not really.'
'Is she a good cook?'
'Naw, she can't cook too well.'
'Does she have lots of money?'
'Nope! Poor as a church mouse.'
'Well, then, is she good in bed?'
'I don't know.'
'Why in the world do you want to marry her then?'
'Because she can still drive!'
Three old guys are out walking.
First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?'
Second one says, 'No, it's Thursday!'
Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer..'
A man was telling his neighbor, 'I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me
four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art.. It's perfect.'
'Really,' answered the neighbor . 'What kind is it?'
'Twelve thirty..'
Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.
A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young
woman on his arm.
A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?'
Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.''
The doctor said, 'I didn't say that.. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be careful.'
And One more. . ..!
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool… After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?'
'No,' he replied, 'Arthritis.'
Now , before you 'forget', send them on to some other folks you know who could use a good laugh.
I love this one!
