Success Criteria

Aim• To be able to add ‘es’ to the end of words to show multiples of an object.

• I can add ‘es’ to the end of words that end with either ‘s’ or ‘x’ to show that there is more than one of something e.g. buses, foxes.

• I can find a word in a sentence that should be plural.

Introductory Activity

Plurals

What does plural mean?

Plural means there is more than one of something.

PluralsWhen there is just one object, we call that singular.

When there is more than one object, we call that plural.

Singular Plural

1 fox 2 foxes

PluralsOften, we just add an ‘s’ to the end of a word to show that there is

more than one of something, but for some words we add ‘es’ instead. We add ‘es’ to the end of words that end in a ‘hiss’ sound – words

like box and bus.

2 boxes 3 buses

PluralsThese words would sound very strange if we just add an ‘s’ to the end! Try saying these words aloud! Do they make sense?

2 boxs 3 buss

2 boxes 3 buses

Remember: words that end in an ‘x’ or and ‘s’ need ‘es’ added to the end of the word to show that there is more than one.

Now say these words aloud. These make much more sense!
