Lesson 58
What do we ask God to do when
we pray the Fourth Petition?
What does the Bible teach us about God’s giving daily bread?
Philippians 4:19
And my God will meet all your
needs according to his glorious
riches in Christ Jesus. all our
bodily needs
What does the Bible teach us about God’s giving daily bread?
Psalm 145:15-16
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at
the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
What does the Bible teach us about God’s giving daily bread?
Matthew 5:45
He causes his sun to rise on the evil
and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. God gives to
all people
What does the Bible teach us about God’s giving daily bread?
James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from
above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows.
What does the Bible teach us about God’s giving daily bread?
Romans 8:32
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give
us all things? as a gracious gift
Key Point #1
God gives all people their bodily needs as a gracious gift.
Why, then, does Jesus teach us to pray for our daily bread?
Psalm 118:1
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
which we receive with thanksgiving
Why, then, does Jesus teach us to pray for our daily bread?
Matthew 6:25-34
Matthew 6:25-34“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is
not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do
not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his
life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of
these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not
much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these
things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each
day has enough trouble of its own.
Why, then, does Jesus teach us to pray for our daily bread?
Matthew 6:25-34
trust God to provide what we need each day
Key Point #2

trust God to keep providing them day by day.

Why didn’t Jesus teach us to pray, “Give me this day my
daily bread”?
Agree or Disagree?
God would bless us more if we asked him for more. Give a
reason for your answer.
Agree or Disagree?
It would be wrong to pray for good enough grades in high
school to get into a good college, because that isn’t
something you need for today.
Which petitions of the Lord’s Prayer deal with our bodies’ needs? Which petitions deal
with our souls’ needs? Does this tell us anything?
Is it ever okay to worry? Why or why not?
Agree or Disagree?
People who suffer from depression should pray the
Fourth Petition several times a day to get God’s help. Then they
won’t need to go to a doctor.
