Lesson 29

Why is it important that

Jesus is both God and man in one

person?

How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?

1 John 5:20We know also that the

Son of God has come and has given us

understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is

the true God and eternal life.

How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?

1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God and one

mediator between God and

men, the man Christ Jesus…

called God and man

…and teaching them to obey everything I

have commanded you. And surely I

am with you always, to the very end of

the age.

How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?

John 21:17The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John,

do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked

him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my

sheep.”

see I have.

Matthew 8:23-27Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without

warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept

over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and

woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so

afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The

men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even

the winds and the waves obey him!”

How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?

John 11:38-44Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid

across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not

tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the

stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I

said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that

you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus,

come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of

linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes

and let him go.”

actions of God and

man

Key Point #1We know that Jesus is both God and man because the Bible calls

him both, tells us he has the characteristics of both, and tells us that he does the things that

both do.

How did Jesus become true man and true God together in one person?

Matthew 1:20-23But after he had considered

this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream

and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your

wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. “The virgin will be with child and will give

birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which

means, “God with us.”born of

the virgin Mary

conceived by the

Holy Spirit

How did Jesus become true man and true God together in one person?

Colossians 2:9

For in Christ all the fullness

of the Deity lives in bodily

form…The God-Man

Key Point #2

Jesus became both God and man together in one person at the

same time when he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and

born of the virgin Mary.

What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?

Galatians 4:4

But when the time had fully

come, God sent his Son, born of a

woman, born under law… under the

law

What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?

Hebrews 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who is

unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

but we have one who has been tempted in every

way, just as we are—yet was without sin. lived a

perfect life

What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?

Romans 5:19

For just as through the disobedience of

the one man the many were made sinners, so

also through the obedience of the one

man the many will be made righteous. for us

Key Point #3One reason Jesus became the God-man was so he could be

subject to God’s law and keep it for us.

What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one

person?Hebrews 2:14

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might

destroy him who holds the power of death—

that is, the devil— died

What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the

What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin

of the world! for us

Key Point #4The second reason Jesus

became both God and man was so that he could die and by his death pay for the sins of the world.

Many people who call themselves Christians deny that Jesus was born of a virgin. Go back through our lesson for today, and think about the part

Jesus’ virgin birth plays in God’s plan to save us from sin. Then answer this question: “Is the doctrine of the virgin

birth an important truth to believe? Why or why not?

Agree or Disagree?

God died.

Luther once said that the devil would really be able to put a lot of doubt

about salvation in our minds when we are close to dying if he could come to

us and say, “Jesus can’t be your Savior because he is only a man!” or “Jesus

can’t be your Savior because he is only God!” How would Satan be able to put

a lot of doubt about our salvation in our minds if he could say either of those things to us when we are near

death?
