VOCABULARY

• Quran main book for the Muslims.• Sura each of the 114 chapters in which is

divided Quran. Each Sura is different, there are really short Suras and there are quite long Suras

• Allah Muslims’ God, the One and the Only.• Imam prayer leader• Ulema interprets the Holy Texts• Caliph is political leader and religious leader• Kadi judge, someone to decide

• 1.2.1. Islamic Religion– Quran is the Holy Book for Muslims and tells

them things that Allah told Muhammad. It has 114 Suras, a few of them define the religion and the rest of them regulate everyday life

– Islam is a monotheism religion. Muslims believe in Allah, only in Allah

have:• Imam the person who leads the pray• Ulema the man who interprets Quran

– Islam has two big families:• Sunismo 90%, they don’t care about Caliph is

Muhammad’s family• Chiismo 10%, they think that only Muhammad’s

relatives can be Caliph

• 1.2.2. Islam, a behavior code– Muslims don’t see different between religion and

common life.– Caliph is chosen by Allah to represent him on

Earth. Early Caliphs were Muhammad’s relatives.

– Everything belongs to Allah, men use these things, but Allah is the owner.

– Everything about Justice or Everyday Life is writen in Quran

• Duties (Obligaciones) of Islam– Believe in Allah, pray five times a day, dont

eat during Ramadan month, give money to poor people and visit Mecca once in life

• Bans (Prohibiciones) – Drink alcohol, eat pig meat, gambling (juegos

de azar), wearing inappropriate clothing

Polygamy, to have more than one wife.
