• The SA National Strategic Plan (NSP) 2007-2011 identifies ‘Supportive Leadership’ as one of it’s guiding principles, highlighting once again the critical role of leaders in successfully achieving the aims of the plan.
Why Executives and Leaders in Business ?
• Businesses are skilled in disseminating messages and distributing goods.
• Businesses has access to large numbers of individuals.• HIV and AIDS impact on business in sub-Saharan Africa
is greater and harder than other regions.• Research proofs that sound and visible leadership is
necessary if impact is to be seen; First Rand Bank Group.
• 38% of firms in sub-Saharan Africa have HIV and AIDS policies, of these, only 16% are formal policies.
BACKGROUND TO PROGRAMME
PROGRAMME MISSION
The Programme aims:
1. To ensure current and upcoming SA leadership that are knowledgeable in their role to limit the spread of HIV.
2. To sustain such leadership and training in the country.
GOALS
1. To provide capacity, guidance and facilitate decision making to implement HIV and AIDS workplace programmes.
2. To facilitate and empower business leadership to support and buy-in to effective and proven
HIV/AIDS strategies that mitigates its impact on the public and private sector.
OBJECTIVES
Objectives for goal 1 are to;
1. Set business standards needed to achieve a comprehensive HIV and AIDS strategy.
2. Develop management strategies to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS in their work environment.
OBJECTIVES (continue)
1. Build partnerships with key stakeholders to ensure the delivery of a holistic and comprehensive HIV and AIDS strategy.
2. Advocate and lobby to facilitate the commitment of internal and external stakeholders in addressing HIV and AIDS.
Objectives for goal 2 are to;

Course to be integrated into existing training programmes.
TARGETED PROGRAMS AND AUDIENCE

Senior management and leaderships training institutions:
1. Public institutions.– SAMDI : South African Management Development Institute.– FSTDI: Free State Training and Development Institute.
2. Private institutions.– Graduate School of Business University of Kwa zulu Natal.– Durban University of Technology, Business School.– Graduate School of Business Leadership- University of South Africa.– University of Stellenbosch , Graduate Business School.
PARTNERSHIP - TERMS
• USAID| HPI signs a partnership memorandum with each institution.
• USAID|HPI provides technical and material support for implementation during the first two years.
• Government officials to be trained at a reduced fee.
• After two years, institutions are expected to offer the course as a part of their core curriculum and ensure sustainability.
• After two years USAID|HPI will review the progress, assess the challenges and highlight the successes.

The guide will cover the reasons for developing a response to HIV and AIDS with a focus on;
• The hard business case for decision making.• Developing and leading effective strategic planning of
policies.• Providing leadership and directing interventions.

The final product would vary per institution but would include one or a combination of the following;
• Online material• Manual • CD• Standard Power Point Presentations per module

PROGRAMME DIFFERENTIATING FACTORS
• An integrated versus an elective course.
• Business as an effective global citizen.
• Explores ways in which strategic and responsible practice can be associated with bottom-line benefits.
• Business and politics; how firms and industries are actors in the political, social and economic system.
• Incorporate social, moral and ethical issues in addressing HIV and AIDS in the world of work.
• Provide resource list of potential partners and funding organizations.
• Provide references, tools and material to measure cost, plan strategies, allocate resources equitably, monitor and evaluate programmes.
