Learning Objectives

How do plates move?

What are the different types of plate margin?

Learning Outcomes

• All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

• All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

• All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Five minute Recap

• Draw a diagram showing the structure of the Earth

• Add two labels and pass it on for the next person to add two more labels

• Continue until you cannot add anymore labels

• Check your labels against your reference sheet

What are the major tectonic plates of the Earth?

• Empty the jigsaw pieces from the envelope

• You need to decide where they go and then stick them down. Name each plate

• Who can get their map done first?

• Why is ‘major’ underlined?

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

How is this map different to the previous one?

• Explain how can this image can be linked to plate tectonics?

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Convection Currents

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Label your diagram to show what is happening in the

mantle

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

• Watch the video clip and note down as many key terms as you can

• You will be writing a summary of the video so pay attention!

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Plate Margins

• Name the types of plate margin identified in the video clip

• When prompted on your whiteboards use arrows to show the variation of movement/crust shown at each margin

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Destructive margins

1.Oceanic plate moves towards continental plate.

2.Oceanic plate moves towards oceanic plate.

3.Continental plate moves towards continental plate

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Conservative margins

1. Occur when two plates move parallel or nearly parallel to each other.

2. There is no creation or destruction of crust

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Constructive margins

1. Where plates move apart in oceanic areas they produce mid-ocean ridges

2. Where they move apart in continental crust they produce rift valleys

3. The space between the diverging plates is filled with basaltic lava upwelling from below

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics

All of you will be able to identify the different plate margins

All of you will be able to describe the type of movement at different plate boundaries

Plenary

• RAG the learning outcomes

• Summarise the lesson in four sentences

• Name four key terms you have learnt today

• What do you think next lesson will be about?

All of you will be able to describe and explain convection currents and their role in plate tectonics
