WICHITA FALLS — TheMuseum of North Texas His-tory has not been approachedin any official capacity to re-house the Confederate Mon-ument which is located infront of Memorial Audito-rium in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Board and Staff of theMuseum of North Texas His-tory are aware of the discus-sions surrounding themonument, and that in othertowns and cities across the

country, museums have be-come a repository for Con-federate Statues andMonuments. We appreciatethe public for wanting to en-gage the Museum into thisconversation to provide con-text and history.

We, as an organization, are willing to participate inconversations surroundingthe monument with both res-idents and the Wichita FallsCity Council.

Continued from Page 1into office on Wednesday, less than 48 hours afterCounty Judge Rick Lewisannounced his resignationand retirement.

Dealing with mass gather-ings is just one of literallythousands of things JudgeBenton noted he was havingto learn “on the fly.”

At the top of his list of“things to learn” is how tohandle probate matters andguardianships – but those arejust the tip of the iceberg, hesmiled Monday morning.

There are things likeemergency management, pandemics, open meetingslaws, open records laws, andhundreds of other laws thatJudge Benton was aware hewould need to learn. And thenext training seminar for newcounty judges will not beconducted until January, afterthe November general elec-

tions so that means lots ofreading, and consultationswith current and formercounty judges as well as at-torneys with the Texas Asso-ciation of Counties.

Near the top of the list atthe recommendation of thelist, he said recalling a con-versation with an attorney forthe Texas Association ofCounties, was the on-linetraining regarding openmeetings and open records.

The judge noted he al-ready has the names andphone numbers of several ex-perienced judges who havestepped forward and offeredto help him navigate thecomplex waters of adminis-tering a county.

Meanwhile, lurking nearthe top of his desk is finaliz-ing the 2020-21 countybudget. “It’s going to be chal-lenging,” he said of thebudget.

It had been more than five

weeks since the last “posi-

tive” Covid-19 cases was re-

ported involving a resident

of Montague County. Then

in just a few days last week

the count went from 9 to 17.
