Laws of MotionGQ #2-3

Science/7th grade

What do you know?

• What are Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion?–Discuss your ideas with your table

• Read pages 598-604 in the green Textbook …pay attention to the diagrams and

examples of each of the laws10 minutes (Silently!)

Newton’s 1st Law of Motion

• An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an outside force.

• Example: A golf ball will remainat rest on a tee until it is acted onby the unbalanced force of the moving golf club.

Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion

• The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of an object and the amount of force applied. • Force =Mass x Acceleration (F=M x A)

EXAMPLE: An empty grocery cart requires less force to move it then a cart filled with groceries.

Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion

• For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

• Example: As the swimmer’s handspush on the water (action force), thewater pushes back on the hands (reaction force), moving the swimmer forward.

JE #3: Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion 4/22

Look at the pictures below and decide how they demonstrate Newton’s 3 Laws of motion. Record your answers in your science binder…give details!

Brain Pop: Newton’s Laws of Motion

So…Which Law???1. The car traveled at a constant speed on the

expressway on our way to Florida.2. It takes more force to shovel wet sand than it

does to shovel dry sand.3. The tube with two people will accelerate faster

down the water slide then the tube with one person.

4. When the bumper boats collided, they both moved off in opposite directions.

5. The person continued moving forward into the water, even though his tube stopped when it hit pool at the end of the slide.

Demonstrating Your Understanding of Newton’s Laws

• Use the paper provided by your teacher to draw, color, title and explain an example demonstrating each of Newton’s 3 Laws.

• You may not use any examples from the textbook or those discussed in class, or those of your tablemates.

• Include a difference example/picture for each law.

Newton’s Laws Example

• Newton’s First Law of Motion:

The snowball is at rest in the boy’s hand until the force from his arm is applied to the snowball to make it move through the air.
