LAPTOP 101: GUIDELINES AND CARE

GUIDELINES

Laptop use is a privilege, not a right. Computer privileges can be lost.

Follow the ACS Internet use policy and student user agreement regarding appropriate use. (Please see the Student Handbook.)

REMEMBER

Intentional abuse or misuse of the laptop or its components (screen, keyboard, trackpad) will result in disciplinary action.

BEFORE USING A LAPTOP

Make sure your hands are clean.

Clear your desk of any unnecessary items, such as notebooks or extra textbooks.

GETTING A LAPTOP

Always get your assigned laptop unless a teacher tells you otherwise.

Unplug the power adapter and gently slide the laptop out of the cart.

Carry the laptop with two hands to your desk.

When your teacher tells you to, open your laptop carefully and make sure the top is not over extended. The top and bottom should form an “L” from the side view.

USING THE LAPTOP

To turn the laptop on, carefully push the power button on the top right hand corner of the keyboard.

Use one finger on the track pad to move your cursor.

Two fingers will allow you to scroll up and down.

Don’t touch the screen. Touching it with your fingers or objects can damage it.

If you have a cold, ask for a kleenex from your teacher. Avoid sneezing on the keyboard.

LAPTOP SETTINGS

Laptops are shared. Don’t change any of the laptop settings. This includes the dock position or size. Applications should not be set to open at login. The desktop image should not be changed. Changing the laptop settings may result in the loss of laptop privileges.

With permission from a teacher, the volume can be adjusted.

DOWNLOADS, SAVING, AND PRINTING

Check the downloads folder for any items that have been downloaded.

Laptops are shared. Student work should be saved to a flash drive.

Don’t print without permission from a teacher. (Only print one time.) If you have trouble printing, notify the teacher. Don’t close out of your file or document unless you have a saved or printed copy of your work.

QUITTING APPLICATIONS

When you are done using the laptop, check the dock and Quit any open applications. A black dot will appear under your open applications.

To Quit,

Next to the , at the top left of the screen, click on the name of the application.

Or, in the dock, click and hold the mouse on the icon of the application. In the window that pops up, click on Quit.

TURNING THE LAPTOP OFF

When you are finished closing out all of the open applications, shut down the laptop.

Wait for the laptop screen to turn black. Then, gently close the laptop.

RETURNING THE LAPTOP TO THE CART

Return your laptop to the cart when directed by your teacher.

Be sure to carry the laptop with both hands as you did when taking it to your desk.

Place the laptop back into its proper numbered slot and plug in the charger.

REMEMBER

Always wait for instructions from your teacher.

Be respectful and responsible and always listen to directions.

Ask for help before you try to “fix” something.

Never touch your neighbor’s keyboard or laptop.

Use the laptop properly to keep it in good working order.

Don’t click on or open items or applications you aren’t asked to.

No food, gum, candy, or drinks when using the laptops.

PLEASE RESPECT AND TAKE CARE OF OUR DEVICES

Thank you for helping us keep the laptops in great condition!
