Searching by keywords matches the

exact words found in a record,

Word Root Variants

One of the first mistakes in query formulation is not

using word root variants sufficiently.

Truncations

This allows you to search all the variants of a word

by putting a * after its stem.

DON'T stop for when searching texts and titles on

time, these engines routinely ignore stop words, i.e.,

Stopwords are words that, if

indexed, could potentially return

every document in the database

if the word was used in a search

Stop Words

These common words are referred to as “stoplist”

words: they are essential to the connecting tissue in

language, but they are filler in any search request.

All search engines ignore them because they have

minimal information value and are found commonly

in all language. Search services may include on the

order of 600 of these common words in their

“stoplists”; if you use them in a query they are

ignored.

Therefore, you should ignore them as well.

Finding the “right” terms or phrases in formulating a

query can be quite tricky.

There are sometimes technical terms or terms of art

in a given domain that us, as lay people, may not be

aware of. For example, a concern over “bone loss”

or “calcium deficiency” may result in documents

that more precisely define the condition as

osteoporesis.

There are perhaps 50 countries around the world whose English is traditional, and not based on usage and spelling in the United States.

As a searcher, you should be aware that many common terms – colour/color, organise/organize, behaviour/behavior – may differ in spelling between these two forms.

If you suspect that a keyword in your queries may have alternate spellings, we advise you to treat these alternates in the same way you handle synonyms: list both forms in an OR Boolean expression.

The Central Role of Your Queries

Your ability to find the information you seek on the

Internet is a function of how precise your queries are

and how effectively you use search services.

Searching for a keyword in the title field, rather than

as a keyword alone, will very likely produce more

relevant responses.

DOMAIN SEARCHING

If you are seeking information from a particular kind of site, you may choose to limit your field search to one of the current top level domains

edu -- educational site

com -- commercial business site

gov -- U.S. governmental/non-military site

mil -- U.S. military sites and agencies

net -- networks, internet service providers, organizations

org -- U.S. non-profit organizations and others

DOMAIN SEARCHING

EXAMPLE:

domain:edu AND "On the Origin of

Species" AND Darwin

HOST (OR SITE) SEARCHING

If you are seeking information that resides on a

specific computer or server, you can narrow your

search with a "host" or "site" query.

EXAMPLE: host:www.sc.edu

URL SEARCHING

If you are seeking a specific file, and that file's name

is part of the host site's URL, you may find it more

quickly by choosing a URL search.

EXAMPLE: url:bck2skol

LINK SEARCHING

If you have a web page and would like to know who

is linking to it, or if you would like to see who is

linking to a particular page of interest, you may

choose a LINK search.

EXAMPLE: link:www.sc.edu/beau

IMAGE SEARCHING

If you want to find a particular image on the web, you

may choose an IMAGE search. You will need to

specify the image by name, which works well if the

name is part of the image file name. If not, you may

miss that particular image altogether.

EXAMPLE: IMAGE:bones.gif

Principles of KeyWord Selection

1. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) signs in front of words to force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches.

2. Use double quotation marks (" ") around phrases to ensure they are searched exactly as is, with the words side by side in the same order.

3. Put your most important keywords first in the string.

4. Type keywords and phrases in lower case to find both lower and upper case versions. Typing capital letters will usually return only an exact

5. Use truncation (or stemming) and wildcards (e.g., *) to look for variations in spelling and word form.

words in the title, date, site, etc., easy to do on an

Use the Boolean NOT to keep out pages containing

words you don't want

Drop off the least important concept(s) to broaden

your subject

Use more general vocabulary

Add alternate terms or spellings for individual

concepts and connect with the Boolean OR

8- تصفح النتيجة في الصفحة االولي او الصفحات الثالث االولي :التقويم توقف %( ..100) مرضية هل وصلت لنتيجة.
