Only when the individual takes responsibility and is taught the skills to manage their own health, will healthcare become affordable and available for all.

We know the problems:

• 1 million more pensioners now than in 2010.• Another million retiring by end of this Parliament.• Rising expectations.• New technologies and medicines increase costs.• 1.7 million NHS employees (65 million citizens).• Rationing of healthcare becoming evident.

Deficit of £1.2 million each WEEK.

GP services will collapse by 2019 in Cambridgeshire (local CCG information).

• Need another 435 beds at Addenbrooke’s by 2018.• Can’t recruit clinical staff fast enough.• GP services starved. Non-viable as partnerships.• GP’s provide 90% contact but get 8% funding.• Hospital-centric care not sustainable.

Dad is looking much better.

His NEWS was 6 (usually 1 or 2). The Community Nurse gave him IV antibiotics at home rather than admit him again. He had lost weight and was less active but is recovering now.

Patient becomes the consumer. Carer pays.

• Tendency to build data silos for “security.”• NHS-operated telehealth too expensive?– only justifies prevention of hospital admissions.

• Patient to become the consumer.– share DIY data with HCWs reducing costs.

• Significant cultural issues for the EU policy makers.

Self-monitoring by patient. Self-management.

Small changes. Big differences. “Marginal Gains” ethos.“Respiratory disease is the poor relation of the big three.”Educate the family and patient to self-manage to save costs. Hospitalisation

unsustainable.

Engage with certified medical devices (cross-over) with a consumer-focus.

Empower. Trust the consumer of health services to be savvy. Amazon, Facebook. Manage our money, mortgages, car tax, phone contracts with connected services.
