The “slum” also has a unique history of being home to a population of single women who – historically – filled the gap of the absent wives for the male population workers whose wives and families stayed back in the rural areas by design and necessity.

Majengo-Pumwani “slum” was established in the 1920’s when the Africans were moved from the Pangani area to facilitate settlement of the Asian community.

It is located about 2 km east of the city centre and covers an area measuring 17 ha.

inadequate social halls for communal activities In as much as there exists an extensive informal

market in the settlement, most of the residents hardly benefit from it.

Provide waste management areas/zones, shift settlements from river Riparian

Enhance the existing communal areas by providing facilities necessary for recreation.

Enhance Open air industries “Jua kali’ sector by providing more space for their activities.

Enhance urban Agriculture at the river riparian that will enable residents sell the produce to the market.
