• A simile is a comparison of two things that have some quality in common. A simile contains a word such as like, as, resembles, or than.

• Example- “All the yards on Residence Street were as neat as a freshly made bed.”

• This quote compared yards to a neat bed using ‘like’

• Effect- to show that the yards looked nice and neat

• A metaphor is a comparison of two things that have some quality in common. Unlike a simile, a metaphor does not contain a word such as like, as, than, or resembles. It suggests that one thing is another.

• Example- “Woodrow and Porter talked over my head. It was if suddenly they were old pals and I was a bump on a log”

• Directly compares Gypsy to a bump on a log- no like or as

• Effect- to show that she felt ignored- was jealous of Woodrow and Porter being friendly

• An exaggeration used in speaking or writing to make an effect, and is not meant to be taken literally.

• Example- “That was the only way I could tolerate having hair longer than Rapunzel’s”

• This quote exaggerates the length of Gypsy’s hair to show that it is too long.

• Example- “The mountains loomed over us like friendly giants”

• This makes the mountains seem human- like they are protecting the people.

Idiom- an idiom is an expression in which the actual meaning is much different from the literal meaning of individual words.

Ex.- “No, they’re just chewing the fat.”

Literally- they are chewing on fat- Real meaning, they are talking or gossiping.

Flashback- a flashback is a conversation, episode or an event that happened before the beginning of the story

Ex.- In the story Belle Prater’s Boy by Ruth White, Granny remembers back to earlier times when Belle got her heart broken by Amos, and then ran off with Everett.

Suspense- a feeling of growing tension that makes a reader curious

Ex.- In “Ghost of the Lagoon” suspense is created when Mako sets out into Tupa’s territory.

Literature Book

Allusion- a reference to a famous person, place, event, or work of literature.

Ex- In “Belle Prater’s Boy by Ruth White, the Gypsy makes an allusion to the crucifixion in Holy Bible when she says that being the step daughter of Porter Dotson is “a cross I had to bear wherever I went.”

The earlier quote about Rapunzel is also an allusion because it refers to a fairy tale character.

• Foreshadowing- Is a hint about an event that will occur later in the story.

• Ex. In “Belle Prater’s Boy by Ruth White, Gypsy’s recurring night mare of the dead animal foreshadows something, as do her comments about the burden her hair is, but you have to wait to find out!

• Sensory imagery-words and phrases that help readers see, hear, taste,smell, and feel what a writer is describing.

• Visual Imagery-The process of forming a mental picture based on a written description.

• Ex. Our house was a modern, one-story brick ranch, with white shutters, a front porch, and the only picture window in town.”

• Auditory Imagery-Using vivid words to describe sounds.

• Ex. We would say words into the electric fan. It’s the rotating blades, they take the sound waves and chop them up and it makes your voice sound real funny.

What is Irony? Irony is a contrast between what is expected and what really happens.For example: in most of today’s action stories, you “expect the unexpected” to happen. But when something different happens, it’s ironic.

There is a big difference between dialogue and dialect. Dialect is the type of language a certain group of people speak. Dialect is often stereotyped.

In Belle Prater’s Boy, the characters speak in Appalachian Mountain Dialect.

Ex- “Ya’ll didn’t have a piano in that l’il ol’ shack, didja?”

Dialogue is the words that characters speak. Such as lines in a play, or words in quotes in a book. Example: “Don’t touch me!” Eric said.
