What do I look like when I coach?

Non-Verbal Communication

More important than the words you use

Position of a coach is a position of power

Exaggerated power when coaching children vs. adults

Male vs. Female Coach

Male coaches project more power and dominance

than female coaches

Know Your Audience

Players come with different experience levels

Preface

Words account for only 7%

Tone of voice accounts for 38%

Body language accounts for 55%

Non-Verbal Statistics

Tone of Voice

Tone of voice isn’t what we say, but how we say it.

It’s the sound of our words and the

personality we communicate

Inflection, volume, intensity, pitch, etc.

What is Tone of Voice?

Volume – loud or soft

Intensity – Energy behind the words

Pitch – High, normal, low

Practice vs. tournament

Inflection – the way we BEND a word

Dissecting Tone

Perception Based on Tone

Tone, combined with facial expressions completes the message

Inflection, volume, intensity, pitch, etc.

+ Frown, furrow, smile, etc.

Combine Tone with Facial Expression

Perceptions of Facial Expressions

Type Result

Pursed lips Anger

Furrowed brow Questioning or frustration

Upturned mouth Agreement, confidence

Head shake Negative or positive

If 38% of what we say is tone, what are we really saying?

Furrowed Brows

Pursed Lips

Raised Eyebrows

Smile

Combinations For a Complete Message

Combinations Results

Clipped while turning away Dismissive

Intense, furrowed brow, correction Failure

Intense, furrowed brow, 2-3 corrections following failed attempt

Failure, disappointment, lack of confidence

Lower pitch, relaxed face Confidence

Upper inflection, smiling eyes/mouth Success, pride (powerful!)

Power of the Complete Message

What is your TONE when YOU coach?

Coaching adolescent players is a position of power

Leader or Bully

Coach or Dictator

Use your tone as a tool to lead

Tool or a Weapon?

Body Language

Mannerisms, postures, facial expressions, stance, physical responses, eye movements

It carries the most impact of the non-verbal forms of communication

What your body communicates to me

What my body communicates to you

What is Body Language?

Open stance

Chin up

Shoulders back and relaxed

Positive Body Language

What does negative body language look like?

Closed stance

Hunched shoulders; making yourself smaller

Protecting yourself

Negative Body Language

How many ways do humans communicate (non-verbal)?

up to 700,000 different signs (wave, point, etc.) the face is capable of over 250,000 expressions 5,000 different hand gestures 1,000 different postures and their accompanying gestures

Words account for only 7% Tone of voice accounts for 38%

Body language accounts for 55%

Non-verbal Statistics

Positive Learning Environment

I’m approachable

I want to help you? I’m engaged

I’m a subject expert

This is fun

I’m passionate about this drill

I encourage you to try a new way

If 55% is body language, what are we saying?

Is our body language saying welcome to a POSITIVE learning environment?

Negative Body Language?

Or is our body language saying here is a NEGATIVE learning environment?

Negative Learning Environment

You annoy me or I’m frustrated with you

I have to help you

I’m new or unsure myself

I’m bored. This routine is getting old

I don’t really like this drill

I’ve given up on you learning this

What about over time? How do we look in tournament?

What do I look like when you coach???

What about your players body language?

Are you receiving the message

Take time to LOOK

See what your players are saying to you

Negative Playing Environment

Negative Learning

This is boring

I don’t trust you or I’m afraid of you

I’m confused or I’m frustrated

I don’t want to learn from you

You don’t believe I can learn or succeed at what you are teaching me

I’ve failed

Positive Body Language

Positive Learning

I’m excited and want to learn

I trust you

I understand

Teach me more

You believe in me

I’ve succeeded

Warning Signs

Protective or closed body language

No response is a form of communication. Blank stare

Lack of acknowledgement

Lack of eye contact

Dismissal

Complete the Communication Cycle

LOOK for a response

Make a connection – confirm

Catalog it for the ‘big picture’

Power Dynamics

Non-verbal expression of power and dominance

Focus on Power Dynamics

General Differences

Less powerful Powerful

Closed body language Open body language

Gender tendency: Female Gender tendency: Male

Follower Abstract thinker

Non-risk takers Risk taker

Stress reactive Laid back

Participates less Participates more

How can I apply this to my coaching?

Do non-verbals govern how we feel about others?

Correlate to Behavioral Outcomes

Yes, there is scientific proof that we draw conclusions which predict outcomes based entirely on non-verbal cues 30 sec sound clip of a physician can determine if they are

likely to be sued. Indicates they are not based on competency

1 sec flash of a presidential candidate face can predict the outcome of the election

Non-verbal body language influences outcomes

Can I influence the outcomes of my coaching by changing my non-verbal body language?

Can We Predict Outcomes Using Non-Verbals?

Does our own non-verbal body language influence what we feel/think about ourselves?

Yes

2 minutes/day can change how you think about

yourself

Can Non-verbals Change Me?

2 minute posing at every practice

Wonder woman, Superman, Finish Line Winners

Constant open body language reminders

Stand straight and tall

Open shoulders, chin up at line up(s)

Can we influence what players think about themselves?

Can we teach pride?

Can we teach confidence?
