Date: September 6, 2018 To: JLMBC From: Staff Subject: LIVEwell Wellness Program Update RECOMMENDATION
That the JLMBC receive and file staff report regarding LIVEwell Wellness Program (LIVEwell Program)
developments, updates, and activities.
DISCUSSION
A. Engagement Plan & Events Update
(1) Communications
The month of August 2018 provided employees with tools for understanding food nutrition labels
(Attachment A) in order to make healthier choices. The monthly webinar also addressed the nutrition
label topic and staff sent a reminder on July 31, 2018 for the webinar event (Attachment B).
(2) Regular Events: Education Classes, Clinics, and Webinars
Education Classes
Staff worked with Anthem to develop a Cooking Demonstration Class. A chef shows employees how
to create a healthy meal by preparing the food, including four courses, and sharing samples. During
the presentation, the chef discusses healthy cooking tips, answers employee questions, and
distributes recipe cards. The classes began on August 9th with eight City locations overall. Staff sent an
All-City email on July 26, 2018 with the Cooking Demonstration Class Schedule (Attachment C). Four
classes have taken place as of this report date, with 105 employee participants.
2
Clinics
Staff completed its coordination of four Vision Pop-Up Clinics consisting of on-site eye examinations
and eyewear retail “stores” for LAwell members. Three of the four clinics were at the same location
as the 2017 clinics. The Marvin Braude Building was replaced by the Garland Building due to low
attendance in 2017 (50%). This strategy proved effective as Garland had the highest utilization rate
(78%) of all locations.
Staff worked with EyeMed to extend the clinic hours at the City Hall clinic (to 6:00 p.m.) while also
offering earlier start times (8:00 a.m.) on select days in order to cater to more employee schedules.
This adjustment resulted in sixteen additional appointment slots for that clinic.
Employees registered for their clinic appointments via the custom EyeMed website created for the
City’s LAwell Program. Employees with appointments were given three appointment reminders. Two
reminders were sent via email, while the third reminder was a phone call the day before the
appointment. Employees were also invited to visit the clinic without appointments to shop for new
glasses if they already had a current prescription. They could also purchase non-prescription
sunglasses at a discount.
Overall, 272 employees received exams, representing 72% of the 376 available appointments across
the four Vision Pop-Up Clinics. This represents a 16% increase in the total number of employees who
received exams versus the 2017 clinics when 235 employees received exams. City Hall had the
highest share of total appointments utilized.
3
The 2018 utilization rate by clinic location is provided in the following chart:
Each of the clinic utilization rates was lower than the previous year (except Garland which did not
have a clinic in 2017) despite three appointment reminders. All of the appointments were booked
prior to the start of each clinic and EyeMed maintained a waitlist to offer appointments to employees
on the list when there were cancellations.
Note: The 2017 utilization above reflects the Marvin Braude Building result, while the 2018 result is for the Garland
Building.
Additionally, EyeMed conducts an optional, anonymous survey of participants who complete their
appointment. The survey questions (Attachment D) consist of eleven multiple-choice, rating, and
open-ended questions.
EyeMed sends an email to participants with the link to the online survey two weeks after each clinic.
The two-week deferral allows time for eyewear orders to be received by members in order for the
survey responses to capture the complete eyewear purchase experience. Then EyeMed analyzes the
data and produces a report. EyeMed expects to complete the survey process for the City’s Pop-Up
Clinics by September with the report to follow shortly thereafter. Staff will provide the survey results
at the November 1, 2018 JLMBC meeting.
Building Address Dates # of Available Appts # of Appts Utilized 2018 Utilization Rate

Webinars
As noted previously, the August webinar topic was on the month’s topic of understanding food
nutrition labels. The webinar, presented by Kaiser, aimed to help employees learn how to read food
labels to make informed food choices that support a healthy diet. Sixty employees participated in the
webinar, representing the second-highest webinar attendance to date.
(3) Special Events: Joint Los Angeles City-County Family Event – October 13, 2018
Staff has developed a relationship with wellness colleagues at LA County. LA County colleagues have shared their experience and best practices from their successful wellness program. As previously reported to the JLMBC, the LIVEwell program is partnering with LA County to co-sponsor a joint family fitness event called Rock N’ Stroll on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Griffith Park. The four-hour annual event, sponsored by Anthem, is free for employees. Each attendee is allowed to bring up to 15 guests. This is the first time a LIVEwell event will include employee friends and family. This supports a key LIVEwell strategy of building a culture of wellness and family support of a healthy lifestyle. This event also offers the following benefits:
Attracts new users to the LIVEwell program with value-added activities.
Provides an opportunity for employees to try healthy practices in a friendly environment.
Promotes and provides additional access to carrier resources.
Grows LIVEwell brand awareness and recognition.
Gathers additional insights into what program elements promote employee participation,
such as weekend scheduling, family events, and different activities like hiking.
The event has a robust schedule of
activities (see right ) that support all
four of the core LIVEwell Building
Blocks, including Prevention, Physical
Activity, Nutrition, and Stress
Management. LA staff will lead the 5K
Fun Run while LA County staff will lead
the 2 Mile Fitness Walks. The event will
also include a DJ as well as a “Kids
Zone” with games and prizes for
children.
Staff developed a comprehensive event day implementation plan and identified volunteer needs to
be two shifts of five hours each. Staff will secure 10 volunteers total.
5
Staff also sourced and ordered merchandise for giveaways. Separate raffle prize drawings for LA City
and LA County will be conducted.
Staff will meet with LA County staff twice in September including a walk-through of the Griffith Park
event space. Then the final event map will be produced.
(4) Special Events: Feel Like A Million Team Challenge Event
Given the success of the 2017 WalkPlus Program, LIVEwell will conduct another online program for
LAwell Program members through the same Kaiser partner, HES, that provided WalkPlus. The new
program, Feel Like A Million (Attachment E), is a customizable, turn-key, online program with mobile
capabilities. It will also be branded under the name of the LIVEwell Program. Feel Like a Million goes
beyond exercise to incorporate other healthy behaviors including nutrition and stress reduction.
Feel Like A Million uses a fun, interactive game show theme with an engaging retro look and fictional,
virtual host Rich Yewels (pictured in the following
graphics) to inspire healthy participant habits –
both physical and mental. Employees experience
how daily rituals contribute to improved energy,
reduced stress, enhanced focus, and greater
resilience. See Attachment F for frequently asked
questions.
The Feel Like A Million tool focuses on simple
actions in five core areas. This approach appeals to participants who may not be particularly strong in
exercise and/or want a more comprehensive and
balanced healthy lifestyle. The five core areas include:
Fitness
Nutrition
Balance (e.g., connections and relaxation)
Purpose (e.g., journaling and meditation)
Potpourri (e.g., volunteering).
Participants check off activities in the core areas to reach the goal of $1 million virtual dollars. They
do not enter steps, minutes, etc., so there is no device integration. However, they can download a
mobile application for convenient mobile program usage. Participants receive a daily email with a link
to log progress, a daily tip, and a recipe of the day.
6
This program also reinforces learning and increases engagement with a TIP$ game and Personal
Energy Posts (PEP) from a certified wellness coach. There are also articles, resource links, and 260
healthy recipes.
HES research indicates there is a 50% increase
in program participation when a team
challenge is involved. Given this fact and that
last year’s team competition was so popular,
there will be a team challenge again this year,
with some modifications. The team competition
will be four weeks instead of six as last year.
That decision was based on feedback from the
2017 WalkPlus Challenge where participant
engagement started to wane after four weeks.
Prizes also differ from those awarded in the
WalkPlus competition.
Employees do not have to participate in the team challenge to take advantage of the program.
Individuals not on a team can still participate and use the Feel Like A Million program on their own.
Teams will be allowed to have up to 40 members. Scores are based on the team’s average. The
Personnel Department will solicit elected official offices to participate as teams in the program. Their
participation and competition will help demonstrate City leadership commitment to the City’s
Wellness efforts.
Team Competition Summary:
Duration: Four week competition, January 28 – February 24, 2018.
Goal: For each team to reach virtual $1,000,000 (average per person).
Teams: 4-40 employees per team.
Scoring: Scores are based on the team’s average virtual dollars per person.
Prizes: Prizes (Attachment G) will be awarded to the top three teams. In the event of a tie, a
random drawing will be held among the top teams.
1st place: FitBit Iconic
2nd place: LIVEwell Exercise Ball Kits
3rd place: LIVEwell Resistance Band Kits
7
Feel Like A Million Challenge Schedule: The dedicated work on program implementation begins
following the Joint LA City-County Event. This schedule also allows for the holidays.

Check your calorie needs at http://www.choosemyplate.gov.
• If there is enough space available on the food package, the Nutrition Facts Label will also list the Daily Values and goals for some key nutrients. These are given for both a 2,000 and 2,500 calorie daily diet.
Nutrients to get less of – get less than 100% DV of these nutrients each day: saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium. (Note: trans fat has no %DV, so use the amount of grams as a guide)
Nutrients to get more of – get 100% DV of these nutrients on most days: dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron.
Nutrients The Nutrition Facts Label can help you learn about and compare the nutrient content of many foods in your diet. Use it to choose products that are lower in nutrients you want to get less of and higher in nutrients you want to get more of.

Feel Like A Million 2019
FAQs
What is Feel Like A Million?
It’s a 4-week program designed to help you feel your best and improve overall health. In this fun, interactive retro game show-themed program, you’ll learn health habits to reduce stress and sustain energy for work and play.
If you want the stamina to take on tough challenges and still pursue other interests… if you’d
like the balance in your life that minimizes stress and lets you focus on your priorities… then
Feel Like A Million is the program for you.
How does it work?
Your goal is to accumulate a virtual $1 million in four weeks by practicing healthy habits in five core areas:
• Moving Matters• Food to Fuel• Better Balance• On Purpose• Potpourri — miscellaneous important actions.
Each category has three or more ways to earn “money;” activities are worth different amounts
based on their stress and energy impact. With multiple ways to work toward the goal, everyone
succeed with Feel Like A Million.
Some activities, like exercise and eating vegetables, allow you to deposit “money” every day,
while writing your personal mission statement you do just once. Different activities are worth
more or less “money," based on their impact on increasing energy and decreasing stress.
Who can participate?
All Civilian Keeping LAwell Members can participate!
If I have a disability can I still participate in Feel Like a Million?
Yes; Feel Like a Million’s self-paced, flexible design fits people of all abilities. If walking isn’t
possible, be as active as you can in whatever ways you enjoy. If you’re unsure which activities
are best, check with your healthcare provider. Also, the National Center on Health, Physical
Activity, and Disability offers specific ideas.
How do you form a team? The Millionaire’s Club, is a friendly team competition that can help you have more energy and
balance plus less stress. Belonging to a group with similar goals provides more structure than
practicing habits on your own — keeping you more accountable, offering emotional support, and
producing synergy… best of all, it’s more fun!
Attachment F
2
Team Leaders register and join the Millionaire’s Club by choosing a team name and providing
the email addresses of each team member (4-5 people per team). Each person will receive an
email inviting them to register for Feel Like A Million and join the team.
How does the team challenge work? All teams must be formed by January 25, 2019. The team competition will end on February 24, 2019, so to have your activity count toward your team’s score, you must log by March 3, 2019. The top three teams based on the highest team dollar average will win prizes.
In this friendly competition, teams challenge each other to see who can make more virtual
“money.” Although you can participate on your own, it may be the most fun part of this retro
game. Scores are based on the team's average dollars per person. Since participants can earn
“money” in multiple ways, it's an advantage to recruit Club members who will strive for “money”
in all five categories for the best chance at achieving the highest dollar average.
Am I supposed to do all the activities every day?
Not necessarily. There are more than a dozen ways in 5 categories to earn “money” each day. If
you did them all you’d accumulate over $17,000 a day.
How much “money” do I have to earn each day to achieve $1 million?
To reach the $1 million goal you’ll need to earn $12,000 a day if you record 7 days a week. If
you record just five days a week, you can achieve the goal averaging $15,000 a day, plus
$100,000 for completing your personal mission statement.
Why are some activities worth more than others?
Different habits are worth more or less virtual “money,” depending on their impact on increasing
energy and lowering stress. Some, like exercise and eating vegetables, allow you to deposit
“money” every day, while writing your personal mission statement you do just once.
Why don’t I earn extra “money” for exercising for more than 30 minutes?
When it comes to exercise for overall health, more is better (to a point) — particularly if you’re
trying to lose weight; the more you move, the more calories you burn. However, when your goal
is more energy and less stress, 30 minutes a day will do the trick. So if it feels good, keep going,
but your Feel Like A Million daily exercise earnings are still the same for 30 minutes or more.
Why are there maximums for certain activities?
When it comes to the activities that produce energy and reduce stress, the Feel Like A Million
maximums meet the needs for most participants. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other activities
you may want to increase or cut back on depending on your personal situation, so examine
those things you know are energy boosters or depleters, and adjust your routine accordingly.
Can I earn extra “money” for volunteering more than once a week?
No. Research shows that people who volunteer as little as two hours a week experience less
stress, fewer health risks, and more life satisfaction. A key factor, however, is that the activity be
something you enjoy…a cause close to your heart. That doesn’t mean you should limit the
3
amount you volunteer. Your schedule, as well as the satisfaction it produces, will guide your
efforts.
Can I carry over activities from one day to the next?
No. Consistent healthy behaviors are essential to building and sustaining energy and reducing
stress. Feel Like A Million scoring is designed to support long-term behavior change.
I get tired of logging every day — is there an easier way? Tracking your progress is one of the most reinforcing habits you can develop, but there will be days when you simply won’t want to do it. Feel Like A Million makes it easier by allowing you to just click on the rituals you’ve completed each day. Once you’re confident which activities you’ll perform most days, you can move them to your A.D.D. (Automated Daily Deposit) log and record the day’s results in as few as two clicks.
If you’re serious about regaining the energy and vitality you want, without the stress, there’s
really no better way to be accountable to yourself than taking a few minutes daily to record your
progress. It’s the surest method to keep moving toward results.
What if I don’t have access to my computer for a time — how do I record my progress? There’s a Feel Like A Million paper log form you can print and carry with you for those days when you’re not able to access the internet. See the link on the Record page.
Will I lose “money” for bad health habits? Feel Like A Million highlights some common energy drainers and stress producers, but it’s up to you to consider which habits might contribute to feeling less than your best. In almost all instances, if you’re achieving your daily Feel Like A Million “money” goals, you’ll have reduced or eliminated the activities that cause stress or deplete energy. Go to the Rules screen and click on the Burn tab to learn more.
How does the TIP$ game work? The TIP$ game is a fun, easy way to pick up a little extra Feel Like A Million cash. Each daily tip is followed by a question related to the content: answer it correctly and you’ll earn $100 and the chance to solve the TIP$ puzzle; get it wrong and you lose $100. Don’t worry… the questions are easy and the answer is included in that day’s tip.
Am I done when I reach $1 million? No. Keep tracking your progress through the end of the program to see how much “money” you can accumulate, especially if you’re on a team, since every individual score contributes to the team score.
Can I earn more than $1 million? Yes. If you complete all activities every day of the program, your total will easily surpass $1 million.
What are “virtual dollars?” Virtual dollars that are earned and burned in Feel Like A Million represent the value of an activity — not actual, legal tender. The higher the impact the activity has on increasing energy and reducing stress, the more “money” it’s worth.

What if I have questions? If you want to know about boosting energy or reducing stress, click on the PEP (Personal Energy Posts) to ask our expert, Dee Stress. She can’t answer every participant’s question, but she will address those likely to affect most participants. Even if you don’t have a question, check her posts often for the latest on how to Feel Like A Million.
