TheHistoricPennsylvaniaAvenueMainStreetProgramisacommunity-basedcommercialrevitalizationprojectofBaltimoreMainStreets,whichprovidescustomizedsupportandpublicresourcestodesignatedneighborhoodbusinessdistricts.Forgedwithinthecrucibleofsegregation,thePennsylvaniaAvenuecorridorwasavibrantcollectionofcommerceandculture,thecenterofBaltimore’sAfrican-Americancommunity,andhometosomeofBaltimore’sgreatestcitizens,suchasBillieHoliday,CabCalloway,andThurgoodMarshall.TheNewPennsylvaniaAvenueMainStreetProgramworkswithdedicatedvolunteers,interns,fellows,andstafftoimplementthefive-pointapproachofaMainStreet,whichare:brandingandidentity,clean,safe,andgreen,design,economicdevelopment,andorganizationalsustainability.Leveragingourlocalassetsofarchitecturalandculturalheritagewillbuildasustainableandcompletecommunityandpreservealegacyforfuturegenerations.

ThisfellowwillprovideadministrativeandresearchsupportforPennsylvaniaAvenueMainStreet.PennsylvaniaAvenueMainStreetadoptsthefour-pointapproachofaMainStreet(design,organization,promotion,andeconomicrestructuring)tosupportexistingbusinessesandattractnewentrepreneurshipopportunities.ThisfellowwillalsoperformcommunityoutreachforthePennsylvaniaAvenueMainStreetcorridorasneeded.

FellowshipDescription:

CPACommunityDevelopmentFellows(CDFs)willworkwithanapprovedorganizationinthespring2017semester.Thepositionswilllikelybepart-timeduetofunding.Thepositionscanbeextendedintosummer2017iffundingisavailable.Duringspringsemesterastudentwillbeapprovedtowork10-15hoursinordertobalancecoursework.Hoursinsummercanbelongeriftheorganizationcansupporttheworkandifthereisfunding.Fellowswillprovideassistancewithprojects,outreach,andotherdailyworkoftheorganizationthatmaybeconsistentwiththegoalsandabilitiesofthestudent.Specificresponsibilitieswillbedependent

onthepartnercommunityorganizations’needs.Thesecanincludespecialevents,socialmedia,organizations/administrativework,researchandcommunityoutreach.FellowswillsupplementtheircourseworkwithrealworldexperienceandachieveagreaterunderstandingoftheneedsoftheCityofBaltimore.Theywilllearnaboutneighborhoodpolitics,socialjustice,andhowtoworkwithindiversecommunities.
