Types of Managed Systems
Agentless– Best for environments that require very small footprints and are used for specific tasks,
such as one-time inventory collection, firmware and driver updates and remote deployment
Platform Agent– Provides agentless functions and....– Common Information Model (CIM) events and monitoring
• Including monitoring of messages– Inventory– Group and cumulative PTF support
Common Agent– Provides agentless functions and platform agent functions and ...– Additional monitoring features– File transfer

Platform Agents
Director defined protocol– For IBM i, Platform Agent is part of the Universal Manageability Enablement (UME)
Typical tasks– Discover systems– Collect limited platform inventory data– Monitor health and status– Monitor for messages sent to message queues– Manage alerts– Remotely deploy and install Common Agent– Perform limited remote access– Perform limited restart capabilities
CIMOM, 5770-UME, V1R3– IBM Universal Manageability Enablement for i
• Ensure you have the latest OS and UME PTFs!!! This is very important!http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/DocNumber/618224537

Collection Services Prerequisites for Monitoring i
Collection Services must be started
Consider the collection interval for frequency of updates through System Director
– Default is every 15 minutes
Data must be in Collection Services DB2 files to be displayed on IBM i Monitors in Systems Director
– CFGPFRCOL – CRTDBF parameter must be *YES
“No Data Available”– Symptom of possible Collection Services problem when viewing IBM i Monitors

Updating IBM i
Updating IBM i– IBM Systems Director only supports acquisition of
cumulative PTF packages and PTF groups through the GUI
– Support of additional PTF groups with Systems Director 6.3
– Can install single fixes through the Director interface
– Acquisition of single fixes that are not part of a PTF group can only be done via the Systems Director command line interface to check for and download the update

Monitoring Cache Battery Status
Now that the cache battery information is in the inventory, it is possible to monitor the cache battery status
If you get an event regarding cache battery status, you can create an event filter and monitor based upon that event
You can create cache battery monitors through the create monitor tasks– CIM Agent → root/cimv2 → IBMi_CacheBatteryEvent

Monitor IBM Message Queues with CIM agent Monitoring of message queues no longer requires the CAS agent
– Simpler setup– Improved performance
• Message filtering done on IBM i, not on the Director Server

Monitoring IBM i Processes
Create a process monitor from the Manage Processes task
Once a process monitor is createdadditional metrics can be monitored for that processusing the Create monitortask
Requires CAS agent
