WHAT TRENDS WILL SHAPE IXP DEVELOPMENT IN THE NEAREST FUTURE?

TRANSIT PRICES ARE FALLING, BUT…

Since quite a while, connecting to an IXPs is not about saving on transit.

TRANSIT IS NOT THE MAIN COST FACTOR

Today, many Internet companies build and scale their own networks.

Network costs migrate in DIY. Own operational efficiency comes first.

This is a big shift in IXP customers’ motives.

ISPS BECOME A MINORITY

• Only ~24% of 100 latest ASN attributions in Russia can be considered ISPs.

• Who gets ASNs nowadays? Here’s a random selection from last registrations:

AS name Company SegmentAS203809, BITRIX-AS Bitrix OOO, RU Cloud CMS

AS203841, RUSACCREDITATIONRusAccreditation. Federal Service for accreditation, RU

State Agency

AS203843, EKASSIR-AS LLC "Ekassir", RU E-commerceAS204230, GAZPROM-EP-INT-SERVICES-AS

Gazprom EP International Services B.V., RU

Energy company

AS204255, KMPP-AS "Myasokombinat "Kunkurskij", RU Food factory

Diverse organisations are prepared to run their own networks.

ENTERPRISES ADOPT WEB-SCALE IT

• Enterprises wish to match the speed and flexibility of Amazon, Google and other web companies in delivering IT services.

• ‘Agile development’, ‘Lean production’, ‘Uberization’, ‘BigData’, buzz, buzz -> massive outsourcing of IT tasks to the cloud -> massive growth of online transactions.

Web-scale IT requires fast provisioning and reliable connectivity between networks.

OTT VIDEO IS TAKING OVER

• The audience is changing. Millennials (b.1980-2000) use Internet as primary source of video content. Traditional media have no choice but to shift to OTT to follow their audience and preserve revenues.

• 70-80% of the Internet traffic is video. CDNs (and in-house distributed caches) become the primary source of traffic.

• Deploying caches within or next to ISPs is the new peering.
