Word Variation – Automatic Stemming

• Example: Child Bicycle– Child: children children’s– Bicycle: bicycle bicycles bicycle’s bicycling

bicyclists• + or “” will disable stemming.• No variations with single term.

Google Ignores Common Words• Called “stop words”.• Example: on, where, how, la, …• Use + to include stop words.• If only stop words are queried – all will be included.

T.Sharon-A.Frank8

More…• Google favors results that have your search terms near

each other.• Google gives higher priority to pages that have the

terms in the same order as in your query:– New York library – vs. – new library of York

• Google ignores some punctuation and special characters including ,.;?[]()@/#:– Dr. Ruth is the same as Dr Ruth.

• A term with ‘ won’t match a term without:– we’re won’t match were.

• A term with diacritic (accent) won’t match a term without:– Schr?der won’t match Schroder

T.Sharon-A.Frank9

Hyphens”-“ • When Google encounters a hyphen (-) it matches:

– The term with the hyphen.– The term without the hyphen.– The term with the hyphen replaced by a space.

• Example 1:– part-time matches “part-time”, “part time” and “parttime”.– part time matches “part-time” and “part time”.– Parttime matches parttime.

• Example 2:– e-mail matches “e-mail”, “e mail”, and “email”– email matches email

T.Sharon-A.Frank10

Exact phrase matching• “” exact phrase matching:

– “search engine”– “to be or not to be”

• Google does not perform automatic stemming on phrases.

• Google indexes only the first 101KB of a page (example: http://www.esefer.net/kabala.html).

T.Sharon-A.Frank11

Forcing a term + or removing- • + forces a term/stop word.• Example: Star Wars +I• Disables automatic stemming.• - will remove a term from the results.

T.Sharon-A.Frank12
