ITEC project Intergenerational Garden

I think ;by sharing skills and experiences, we can increase understanding and respect between younger and older generations. For this reason,I organized a couple of activities inside and outside the classroom.I also wanted to integrate my curriculum with this activity.Last week’s topic was ‘’to be in the past ‘’and ‘’used to’’ structures..Students tried to use them and at the end of the activities, they had to answer the questions in the worksheets given by me..

Why gardening together?

I also invited some students’ grandparents to my classroom..

Bringing the young and the old together to learn from and about each other was a good point.

The young and old ;both of them asked and answered questions to each other

Grandfathers shared their experiences..

At the end of the lesson;we went outside;they tried to plant flowers alltogether

Before the activity ,students tried to organize the school garden..

They were so excited..

Students prepared some documents for our activity..

Some of the students brought plants and they tried to plant them with his/her peers.

After the activity;students tried to write sentences using ‘’used to’’structure.Ss prepared some presentations and some posters.Ss discussed about intergenerational learning in groups.Ss prepared a questionnaire. The questionnaire offered a list of possible activities in which grandparents might engage with their grandchildren .Here are the results..

Classroom activities:

Talking about family members/family history,

Shopping together, Religious activities, Getting them ready for school/taking them

to school Having breakfast, lunch or dinner together Eating out Gardening/cooking together

The questionnaire offered a list of possible activities in which grandparents might engage with their grandchildren :

I had two main aims: The first one was developing positive

cooperation between the teenage students and the elderly and improving the students’ respect for the others.

The second aim was to implement ‘’used to’’ and ‘’to be in the past’’structures.I think, the result is positive. Creating practices that promote interaction across ages made students learn with pleasure.
