The Lord’s Prayer
26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many.” (Matthew 20:26-28)
Leadership
Leadership in the church is to be different than leadership as we see it prac-ticed in the secular world. In the secular world leadership all too often becomes about building one’s own personal fiefdom. The leader in the church is not to build her/his own fiefdom, but she/he is to serve God by doing God’s Kingdom work on the earth (Ogden 1994, 150)*.
The application of this principal both for clergy and laity in the church is that we need to think outside ourselves and place an emphasis on God’s Kingdom priori-ty above our wants and needs. As pastor this means I put need of the mission field ahead of my own preferences and at times ahead of the preferences of the church when they differ from the needs of the mission field. And so the question for all of us is, “How do we become better servant leaders?” How do we serve the mission field around us for the glory of God and His Kingdom? This is our shared task to-gether.
Below are the Titles and Scriptures for my messages in February. I encour-age you to take a few minutes on Saturday evening or Sunday morning each week to take a look at the scripture for the coming Sunday message and see where the Holy Spirit leads you.
2/4/18 – Life in the Valley – The Valley of Suffering – Isaiah 53:3-5, Hebrews 12:2-3
2/11/18- Scout Sunday – Tools for the Job - 2 Corinthians 8:16-21
2/18/18 – The Practice of Prayer – To Busy to Pray - Luke 10:38-42
2/25/18 – The Practice of Prayer – Taking the Time - Luke 5:12-16
I hope and pray that you have a blessed New Year as we continue to journey with one another and with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
In Christ,
Pastor Jared

Chapter 2-Grace Church History
by Historian Leland Spencer
We trace our history of Grace United Methodist Church back to the congregation of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, who voted in May 1961 to discontinue their ministry there because of a diminishing scope of service in its inner-city location. Their plan was to sell the property and invest the funds in a mission church in the Canton area. In response to this gesture of missionary giving, the Ohio East Conference, acting through its Board of Missions, purchased a 5-acre plot of land on the edge of North Canton and made plans for the construction of the first-unit building. In June 1961, the Rev. Allen Zagray was assigned to be the first pas-tor of the new Grace Church. He, his wife and two daughters moved into a recently purchased parsonage at 1422 Schneider Road. The new church address was 1720 Schneider NW, the present location. Rev. Allen Zagray- First Pastor of North Canton Grace Church. He served until 1969 Forty-four persons united with Grace Church on Thanks-giving Sunday, November 19, 1961, and on April 22, 1962, eleven additional persons were received into membership, bringing the Charter Membership Roll to 55. Sanctuary under construction in 1961, before roof was added. The new building was occupied for the first time on Sunday, January 28, 1962. After opening moments of worship and thanksgiving at the Plain Center school, a 20 car caravan proceeded to the new church home on Schneider Road. Following the caravan to the new church, we met at the main entrance to the building. Our church school su-perintendent Kelsie Cureton led us in opening of the church doors with the following words; “To all who search for God sincerely; To all who mourn and need comfort; To all who are lonely and need companionship; To all who pray and need help; To all who sin and need a Savior; To all who seek to serve their fellowmen; To these, and to whomsoever will, this church opens wide her doors and bids you welcome in the name of the Christ.” After entering the building, Chester Anderson led us in the opening of the sanctuary doors. Linda Roush led us into the area where she lit the Altar candle. Rev. Zagray presented sermon on “Praying for the Kingdom.” Our first Minister of Music was Howard Longmire.
