31

Writing Lewis Formulas:The Octet Rule
Equation: N - A = S
N = number of electrons needed to achieve a noble gasconfiguration. N usually has a value of 8 for representative elements.
N has a value of 2 for H atoms.
A = number of electrons available in valence shells of the atoms.
S = number of electrons shared in bonds.
A-S = number of electrons in unshared or lone pairs.
Writing Lewis Formulas:More rules….
The central atom in a molecule or polyatomic ion isdetermined by: The atom that requires the largest number of electrons to complete
its octet goes in the center.
C vs. N vs. O
For two atoms in the same column, the less electronegative(or lowest ionization energy) element goes in the center.
C vs. Si
Hydrogen never is the central atom.
52
14
Strategy for Lewis Dot Structures
1) Determine central atom
2) Calculate N (needed electrons)
3) Calculate A (available electrons)
4) Calculate S (shared electrons)
5) Put in shared electrons
6) Arrange unshared electrons.
CH4
Example: methane
N = (4H = 8 e-)+ (1C=8 e-) = 8+8 = 16
A = (4H= 4 e-) + (1C = 4 e-) = 4+4= 8
S = 16-8 = 8 (shared electrons)
A-S = 8-8 = 0 (lone electrons)
Example:
water H2O
N = (2H= 4 e- )+ (1O = 8 e- ) = 12 (needed electrons)
A = (2H = 2e- )+ (1O = 6 e- ) = 8 (available electrons)
S = N-A ; 12 - 8 = 4 (shared electrons)
A-S = 8 - 4 = 4 (lone electrons)

Using Bond Dissociation Enthalpies
E.g. Estimate the heat of formation of H2O(g) from bonddissociation energies. Thus determine:
H2(g) + ½ O2(g) H2O(g) = ? From the book (Table 9.5):
H – H (g) 2H (g) H = D1 = 436 kJ½ O=O O (g) H = D2 = 494/2 = 247 kJ2H(g) + O (g) H – O – H (g) H = 2D3 = 2*459 kJ
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------H2(g) + ½ O2(g) H2O(g) = 235 kJ
Actual = 241.8 kJ
Can be determined by suming all the energies for the bonds brokenand subtract from if the sum of the energies for the bonds formed.
E.g. 2 Estimate the energy change for the chlorination of ethylene: CH2=CH2(g) + Cl2(g) CH2ClCH2Cl

Using Bond Dissociation Enthalpies It may be necessary to include a phase change since many reactions or
reactants are not in the gas phase.
E.g. Determine the heat of formation of CCl4(l).
Solution: The reaction is:
C(gr) + 2Cl2(g) CCl4(l) = ?
Write the reactions and sum energies:
C (gr) C (g) H1 = 715 kJ
2Cl – Cl (g) 4Cl (g) H2 = 486
C(g) + 4Cl(g) CCl4 (g) H3 = 1320
CCl4 (g) CCl4 (l) H4 = 43
C(gr) + 2Cl2 (g) CCl4 (l) H = 162 kJ

The diagram for O2 is the general energy-level MOdiagram for second-row homonuclear diatomicmolecules.
The diagram assumes no interaction between the 2sand 2p atomic orbitals and can be used for O2, F2and Ne2.
However, for Li2, Be2, B2, C2, N2 the 2s orbital on oneatom and the 2p orbital on the other interact.Theyare closer together in energy so there is somemixing of the 2s and 2p s orbitals.
The s mixing moves the orbitals further apart:σ2sfalls and σ2p rises in energy.

Frequently, we will describe two geometries for eachmolecule.
1. Electronic geometry is determined by the locationsof regions of high electron density around the centralatom(s).
2. Molecular geometry determined by the arrangement ofatoms around the central atom(s).
Electron pairs are not used in the molecular geometrydetermination just the positions of the atoms in themolecule are used.

Molecular Shapes and Bonding

In the next sections we will use the followingterminology:A = central atom
B = bonding pairs around central atom
U = lone pairs around central atom
For example:AB3U designates that there are 3 bonding pairs and 1
lone pair around the central atom.

The C atoms are located at the center of a tetrahedron. Each alkane is a chain of interlocking tetrahedra. Sufficient H atoms to form a total of four bonds for each C.

If lone pairs are incorporated into the trigonalbipyramidal structure, there are three possiblenew shapes.
1. One lone pair – distorted tetrahedral2. Two lone pairs - T-shape3. Three lone pairs – linear
The lone pairs occupy equatorial positionsbecause they are 120o from two bonding pairsand 90o from the other two bonding pairs. Results in decreased repulsions compared to lone pair
