MARKET FACTORS

New technologies: 5G Cellular & ATSC3 television – faster/better Technology convergence

4K Televisions – now in 1 of 3 US homes, majority TV’s now sold Content now available: Netflix, cable offerings, BluRay, Olympics

Carriage fee fights between providers (ESPN, HBO, TV stations etc.) and cable companies

Decline of Satellite providers (DirecTV, Dish) “Cord Cutting” – consumers no longer paying for cable

Free OTA television and Streaming

Internet only bulk telecom contracts – no cable TV service NOT AN OPTION FOR INLETS

RJA

8

CONTRACT STATUS

Current contract for both Inlets and Carriage Homes expires in September

Current cost ($52 for TV & Internet) is still very competitive Negotiated price freezes

Current pricing offers for similar package by Frontier in $60 -$70

Comcast in same vicinity (or more)

Important note – current Frontier contract does NOT include Over-the-Air (OTA) carriage fees from local TV stations.

Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) important advantage

Expect price increase in next contract

COMCAST ANALYSIS

Capacity constrained

Steals “bits” from cable channels for Internet & phone service

Major parts of network still copper wire (coaxial cable) vs. fiber

HBO channel comparison (Showtime, Cinemax similar): Comcast: 1 High Definition, ~ 6 Standard Definition

Frontier: 14 High Definition, 14 Standard Definition

WHAT IS CUTTING THE CORD?

RJA

18

THREE WAYS TO CUT THE CORD

Cable television

Wireline phone

Cable modem internet

RJA

19

LANDLINE PHONE OPTIONS

Cable TV phone (expensive - $30/month)

Wireless (Cell phone) only May not have a local area code

Internet phone (best value $2 to $9/month) MagicJack

Vonage

Requires wired internet

RJA

20

MAGICJACK & VONAGE

RJA

21

CABLE TV OPTIONS

OTA (Over the Air) television – antenna on roof Inlets can receive stations in Tampa, Sarasota, Ft. Myers

“Free TV” only, not ESPN, CNN, Fox, HBO, etc.

Satellite TV (DirecTV, Dish) In some instances, may be cheaper than cable

Very good sports options – NFL Sunday Ticket

Internet TV (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime) More on this later

RJA

22

OTA TV STATIONS NEAR INLETS

RJA

23

TIVO DVR (DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER)

RJA

24

Tivo’s can replace cable boxes and DVR’s . Require renting a cablecard from cable provider,

ROKU HARDWARE

RJA

25

INTERNET – KEY TO CUTTING THE CORD

Internet is key to nearly all cord cutting Cable modem

Satellite (expensive and relatively slow)

Cellular (4G today, 5G in new three years)

Only buy what you need (a la carte)

Think ahead when purchasing technology – future-proofing

RJA

26

RECOMMENDATIONS

Internet service is a must – as fast as you can afford 15 Mbps min, 50 Mbps recommended, 100 Mbps optimal

When remodeling home, run Cat 6e cable to all TV’s, PC’s, A/V

Buy “Smart” products – TV’s, appliances, HVAC, etc.

Shop smart A la carte premium movie and sports channels

Purchase own cable boxes

Buy products that talk to each other

RJA

27

INTERNET BENEFIT TO RESIDENTS

Monitor the home with CCTV cameras Turn lights off and on Open the garage door and unlock the front door Change thermostat in all zones, Open/close drapes and hurricane shutters Activate/deactivate security system. Check alarms. Video phone call - see grandkids, not just speak to them. FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!!!

RJA

28

INTERNET SPEED CHECK

Go to computer or note pad

Start browser (e.g. Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge, Safari, etc.)

Type in www.speedtest.net Hit GO

Program will give both upload and download speeds

Should both be at least 50 Mbps if connected by wire (Ethernet cable) to router. Wireless Wi-Fi speeds may be a bit slower

RJA

29

SUGGESTIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

Internet is a utility – no need to shut off when you leave Consider adding capabilities to monitor your home when away

May not make sense to turn phone off either – phone options

Pay a little extra and buy a 4K “Smart TV” when time to replace Basically a “computer”. Great graphics, limited memory. Hardwire if possible

Improve streaming options

DVR users – Consider buying TiVO, versus renting from Frontier – media is yours.

Alexa, Siri, Cortana – be careful what you ask for.

LET’S TALK ABOUT E-MAIL…

Nearly 500 Inlets / Carriage Homes residents are e-mail capable But less than 70 have agreed to have e-mail published Why is e-mail different than phone number? FL law -- need affirmative reply from you to use your e-mail address Quicker, easier, cheaper communications method vs snail mail, bulletin boards, ads. Other options and capabilities become available

GoogleGroup e-mail lists, e.g. technology-inlets@googlegroups.com, etc.

Discussion boards

Please reconsider giving other Inlets residents permission to use your e-mail For personal use ONLY. Cannot be used for solicitations or marketing Ways to further minimize exposure, e.g. Aliases. Seminar?
