1. Ingrown toenails are also called onychocryptosis or unguis incarnates.

2. Ingrown toenail develops when the toenail cuts into the flesh of the toe as it grows.

3. An ingrown toenail results in a foreign body reaction to the nail.

4. Poorly cut toenails and wearing poorly fitting shoes contribute to the development of ingrown toenails.

5. Trauma such as occurs when one is running also contributes to the development of ingrown toenails.

6. Heredity also contribute to the development of ingrown toenails.

7. Symptoms of ingrown toenails include a swollen and painful toe.

8. An ingrown toenail can also discharge pus if it becomes infected.

9. The 1st toenail is the most commonly affected nail.

10. The medial side of the 1st toenail is the most commonly affected side.
