INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT Theindustrial revolutionled to the development of factories for large-scale production, with
consequent changes in society. Originally the factories were steam-powered, but later
transitioned to electricity once an electrical grid was developed. The mechanized assembly
linewas introduced to assemble parts in a repeatable fashion, with individual workers performingspecific steps during the process. This led to significant increases in efficiency, lowering the cost
of the end process. Laterautomationwas increasingly used to replace human operators. This
process has accelerated with the development of thecomputerand therobot

TEXTILE INDUSTRY
Historically, Pakistans textile industry and clothing sector has always been a major
contributor to the foreign exchange earner and still contributes
Pakistan's textile industry is emerging as a major player after the global economic meltdown in 2008. The
financial and economic meltdown has resulted in a permanent closure of many mills not only in the EU
and the US but also in textile producing countries like Turkey, Brazil and a few South American countries.
As a consequence, this has brought great opportunities for the textile sector in developing countries like
Pakistan.
The foundations for the industry in Pakistan have always been very strong. Being major cotton producing
country and having a large, modern and efficient spinning and weaving industry as well as the availability
of man power are the strong pillars of the industry in Pakistan. The economic meltdown was a wakeupcall for the value-added industry that survival was for the fittest; it also opened up new opportunities left
by the closures in other parts of the world.
The industry found openings in the higher-end products that were no longer produced in the West. Textile
products originating from Pakistan may have been viewed in the past as cheap or low cost products,
but that perception is changing fast.

The first record of manufacturing of sports goods in Sialkot can be traced back to 1883 when
SardarBahadur Singh and Sardar Ganda Sigh Oberoi built a factory to produce sports goods for
the British Armysoldiers stationed in the northern sub-continent. The products manufactured
were wooden, such ascricket bats, hockey sticks, polo sticks, etc.
In 1918, a British Army soldier for repairs at Oberois factory, where a Muslim artisan known as
SyedSahib was assigned the task, brought a football. Syed Sahib not only re-stitched the
football to the fullsatisfaction of army personal but also reverse engineered it in his own small
manufacturing unit. Britishsoldiers were astonished to play with the local version and they
praised Syed Sahib for his skills.
Subsequently Syed Sahib started catering to the needs of local troops. In 1922, Syed Sahib was
awardedthe first Export Award from the British Empire for his outstanding venture to supply
footballs to theBritish Army camped in Singapore.

GLASS INDUSTRY
INTRODUCTIONNatural glass, known as obsidian, was widely utilised by prehistoric man, and glass
has been made by people for approximately 9000 years. It was first known to be
developed in the Middle East around 7000BC, and glass bottles were made in Egypt
in 1500BC. By the Rennaissance, coloured glass, crystal and mirrors had all been
developed and were being made in Venice. Glass has been manufactured in New
Zealand since 1870, and continues to be widely used despite the increase in usage
of metal and plastic products for containers and windows. It retains its popularity
because of its versatility, relative cheapness, and, in an age of depleting resources,
its recyclability. Glass has two important properties. Firstly it does not have a definite
melting point but softens gradually over a range of temperatures. Secondly it does
not cleave in a plane face like diamond or table salt. The explanation of both these
properties lies in the fact that glass has no ordered structure, but is instead a
supercooled liquid. A sheet of glass left to stand for a long time, perhaps one
hundred years, will actually flow and change its dimensions slightlyThe glass industry
in Pakistan, though developed, still has space for improvement. There are about 37
glassworks in the organized sector, with the production capacity ranging between 10
tonnes and 200 tonnes per day.

EXPLANATION
Glass is produced in a two step process, and then shaped to make it suitable for a variety of
applications.
Step 1 - Batch mixing
The mixture of ingredients to make up the glass (silica, Na2CO3, CaCO3 and recycled
glass, together with small quantities of various other minor ingredients) are mixed in a
rotary mixer to ensure an even mix of ingredients and fed into the furnace.
Step 2 - Batch melting. The mixture is heated to 1500-1550o
C, where the ingredients melt, various chemical reactions take place and CO2 and SO3 are evolved.
Shaping plate glass ;
The molten glass is cooled to 1000o C in a drawing canal, and then drawn up a tower (the drawing
tower) where it is pressed into the desired width and thickness, and cools to
280oC. Individual plates of glass are snapped off at the top of the tower and further cooled
before being put into storage ready for sale.
Molding glass containers:
Here molten glass is channeled off in forehearths (heated channels) where it is slowly cooled to
tempertaures of 1100 - 1150oC to increase its viscosity. Precisely weighed slugs of glass are cut off,
molded with compressed air, cooled slowly in annealing lehrs (special ovens) and coated with a
special spray to prevent scratching.
GLASS INDUSTRIES IN PAKSITAN
Glass industry in Pakistan comprises sixteen manufacturers in the organised sector which
produces over 90 per cent of the indigenous production within the country.
The major ceramics industry are Karam Ceramics, Swat Ceramics, Master Tiles, Shabbir Tiles
and Emco Industries.

CEMENT INDUSTRY
DEINITION & EXPLANATION
Cement industry is one of most prominent and energetic organization having operations and
interactions with cement industry
EXPLANATION
In the most general sense of the word, a cement is a binder, a substance that sets and hardens independently, and
can bind other materials together. The word "cement" traces to theRomans, who used the termopuscaementiciumto describemasonryresembling modernconcretethat was made from crushed rock with burntlimeas
binder. Thevolcanic ashand pulverizedbrickadditives that were added to the burnt lime to obtain a hydraulic binder
were later referred to as cementum, cimentum, cment and cement.
Cement used in construction is characterized as hydraulic ornon-hydraulic. Hydraulic cements (e.g.,Portland
cement) harden because of hydration, chemical reactions that occur independently of the mixture's water content;
they can harden even underwater or when constantly exposed to wet weather. The chemical reaction that results
when the anhydrous cement powder is mixed with water produces hydrates that are not water-soluble. Non-hydraulic
cements (e.g., lime andgypsumplaster) must be kept dry in order to retain their strength.
The most important use of cement is the production ofmortarand concretethe bonding of natural or
artificialaggregatesto form a strong building material that is durable in the face of normal environmental effects.
Concreteshould not be confused with cement, because the term cementrefers to the material used to bind the
aggregate materials of concrete. Concrete is a combination of a cement and aggregate.

AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
DEFINITION
the business of producing and selling self-powered vehicles, including passenger
cars, trucks, farm equipment, and other commercial vehicles.
EXPLANATION.
TheAutomobile industryhas been an active and growing field inPakistanfor a long time, howevernot as much established to figure in the prominent list of the top automotive industries. Despitesignificant production volumes, transfer of technology and localization of vehicle componentsremains low. Most cars in the country have dual fuel options and run onCNGwhich is moreaffordable and cheaper thanpetrolin the country.
According to Ministry of Industries Pakistan produced its first vehicle in 1953, at the NationalMotors Limited, established in Karachi to assemble Bedford Trucks. Subsequently buses, lighttrucks and cars were assembled in the same plant. The industry was highly regulated until the
early 1990s. After deregulation major Japanese manufacturers entered in the market therebycreating some competition in this sector. Assemblers of HINO Trucks, Suzuki Cars (1984),Mazda Trucks, Toyota (1993) and Honda (1994) in particular, entered once deregulation wasintroduced. Assembly of Daihatsu and Hyundai cars (1999) and various brands of LCVs andrange of mini-trucks commenced recently.
From 1953 to 2011 the journey of auto industry has been rough, tough and sometime verysmooth. Car industry saw boom in 2006-2007 when sales touched record peak of 180,834thanks to rising car financing up to 70-80 per cent by banks due to low interest rates and rising

rural buying. Since then the industry has been surviving hard to reach the same sales level amidhigh interest rates and Yen appreciation against the rupee but high farm income is giving muchsupport to car sales. Good crops this year will keep the car sales brisk despite increase inprices.
The car industry has invested over Rs 20 billion in the last four to five years to meet growing
demand. The direct employment in car industry hovers between 5,500-6,000persons.Motorcycle production hit the countrys record level of over 1.5 million units in 2010-2011 by the effort of Pervaiz Musharraf Governments decision that opened bike market to lowcost Chinese bikes. Auto sector now employs 192,000 people directly and around 1.2 millionindirectly and has Rs 98 billion of investments and contributes Rs 63 billion as indirect tax in thenational exchequer.
Auto Sector remains the second largest payer of indirect taxes after the Petroleum Sector. InPakistan's context there are 10 cars in 1,000 persons which is one of the lowest in the emergingeconomies which itself speaks of high potential of growth in the auto sector and more so in thecar production. Rising per capita income with changing demographic distribution and ananticipated influx of 30 to 40 million young people in the economically active workforce in thenext few years provides a stimulus to the industry to expand and grow. FERTILIZER INDUSTRY
Fertilizeris any organic or inorganic material of natural or synthetic origin (other
than liming materials) that is added to a soil to supply one or more plant nutrients
essential to the growth of plants.
EXPLANATION
The fertilizer sector in Pakistan currently comprises of 10 companies 4 of which are in the public sector(Hazara Phosphate Fertilizer (Pvt) Limited, Lyallpur Chemical & Fertilizer Limited, Pak Arab FertilizerLimited, and Pak American Fertilizers Limited) while 6 are in the private sector (Engro ChemicalsPakistan Limited, Dawood Hercules Chemicals Limited, Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited and FFC-JordanFertilizer Company Limited, Pak China Fertilizer and Pak Saudi Fertilizer Company Limited now ownedby FFC).
Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited (FFC) is the largest fertilizer manufacturer in the country with a designedproduction capacity of 1,887 thousand tonnes of urea (including the production capacity of Pak SaudiFertilizer).
Fertilizer production is concentrated in nitrogenous fertilizers, which comprise 85% of all fertilizersproduced in the country. Although other types of fertilizers are also produced in Pakistan, the bulk ofwhose demand is imported. The main reason for this concentration on nitrogenous fertilizers is that itsmain raw materials i.e. natural gas, is cheaply available in the country. The raw material for otherfertilizers such as potassium and phosphate has to be imported and thus local manufacturing is noteconomically viable as demonstrated by Fauji Jordan's problems.

SUGAR INDUSTRY
At the time of independence in 1947, there were only two sugar factories in Pakistan. At present there
are 84 sugar mills operating in Pakistan. It is the 2nd Largest industry in Pakistan after Textile Industry.
EXPLANATION
Sugaris a term for a class of ediblecrystallinecarbohydrates, mainlysucrose, lactose, andfructose,[1]
characterized by
asweetflavor. Infood, sugars refer to all monosaccharides and disaccharides present in food, but excludespolyols,[2]
while
in its singular form, sugar normally refers to sucrose, which in its fully refined (or free sugar) form primarily comes fromsugar
caneandsugar beet, though is present in natural form in many carbohydrates. Other free sugars are used in industrial food
preparation, but are usually known by more specific namesglucose, fructoseor fruit sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc
HUMAN HEALTH EFFECTS
Some studies involving the health impact of sugars are effectively inconclusive. The WHO and FAO meta studies have
shown directly contrasting impacts of sugar in refined and unrefined forms[17]
and since most studies do not use a
population who are not consuming any "free sugars" at all, the baseline is effectively flawed (or as the report puts it, thestudies are "limited"). Hence there are articles such asConsumer Reportson Health that said in 2008, "Some of the
supposed dietary dangers of sugar have been overblown. Many studies have debunked the idea that i t causes hyperactivity,
for example."[18]
though the article does continue to discuss other health impacts of sugar. Other articles and studies refer to
the increasing evidence supporting the links to hyperactivity.[19]
The WHO FAO meta-study suggests that such results are
expected when some studies do not effectively segregating or controlling for free sugars as opposed to sugars still in their
natural form (entirely unrefined) while others do.

SUGAR INDUSTRY PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
For the last three years the sugar industry in Pakistan and specially in Sindh is facing an unprecedented
crisis. This crisis has affected the three factors of production, raw material suppliers, employees and
owners equally.
The growers complain of not getting price which they
demand, delay in payment, employees are not getting
the benefits which they used to get and shareholders
equity has eroded and converted into negative.
Liquidity problem being faced by the mills is so acute
that in most of the cases, the mills are unable to clear
their legal liabilities. The banks are reluctant to
advance to the sugar mills in view of the general
situation. Why all this happened to an industry working satisfactorily till 3 years back and what are the
reasons?
In previous articles on the subject by me, I gave various reasons of this crisis which include higher cost of
production due to higher prices of raw materials, depressed international prices, excessive imports during
the year 2000-2001, demand and supply factors and dual policy in fixation of cane price in Sindh and
Punjab.
There is no doubt the growers will like to get maximum return from their product. However, it has to be
related with the price of finished product. For the last three years the mills have been selling sugar below
cost of production due to market situation whereas the government is fixing cane prices without linking
with sugar price.
Moreover, there is a difference in cane price of Rs 3 per 40 kgs between Punjab and Sindh making sugar
production in Sindh more costly. The mills in Sindh are also required to pay quality premium @ 50 paisas

per point one increase from base recovery of 8.70% whereas such payment is not applicable in Punjab.
The cost of raw materials per ton of sugar in Sindh at 8.70% recovery at Rs 43 per 40 kgs cane price
works out to Rs 12,356 whereas in Punjab it works out to Rs 11,765, making sugar in Sindh costlier by Rs
591 per ton.
The sugar market in Punjab and Sindh mills have to bear transport and transit expenses but the former
fetch lesser price of their product as compared to the Punjab mills.
This is a serious problem and the government of Sindh has to see the logic instead of insisting on
establishing its writ.Immediate solution of the problem is; The government of Sindh should fix cane price
on the basis of sugar price but in any case not higher than Punjab. The sugar industry at its own should
export 500,000 tons of sugar to fill the demand/supply gap and to stabilise market.
The government should consider high rate of sales tax on food items, especially in view that it is resulting
in miseries both for the mills and the growers.Long-term measures could also be suggested. However,
this is the time when the patient is to be taken out from coma and vitamins could be suggested later on.
LEATHER INDUSTRY
The leather made ups and finishing industries symbolize an important division in Pakistan, earning
approximately more than five million US dollars as a foreign exchange earnings to the country.
EXPLANATION
Leather can be made from cows, pigs, goats, and sheep; exotic animals such as alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos; and even
dogs and cats, who are slaughtered for their meat and skin in China, which exports their skins around the world. Because leather is
normally not labeled, you never really know where (or whom) it came from.
Most leather comes from developing countries such asIndiaand China, where animal welfare laws are either non-existent or not
enforced. In India, a PETA investigation found that workers break cows' tails and rub chili peppers and tobacco into their eyes in
order to force them to get up and walk after they collapse from exhaustion on the way to the slaughterhouse.
In the U.S., many of the millions of cows and other animals who are killed for their skin endure the horrors of factory farming
extreme crowding and deprivation as well as castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorningall without any painkillers. At
slaughterhouses, animals routinely have their throats cut and are skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious.
Buying leather directly contributes to factory farms and slaughterhouses because skin is the most economically important byproduct
of the meat industry. Leather is also no friend of the environment, as it shares responsibility for all the environmental destruction
caused by the meat industry as well as the pollution caused by the toxins used in tanning.

SURGICAL INDUSTRY
PAKISTAN SURGICAL INDUSTRIES (PVT) LIMITED was established in 1974 and now has become one of
the leading manufacturers of Surgical, Dental & Beauty Care Instruments in the world
EXPLANATION & HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
From historical viewpoint manufacturing of surgical instrument started at the turn of the 19th
century when the doctors of American Mission Hospital Sialkot had given some Scalpels and other
used instruments to the artisan of community of black smiths who had the skill of making swords
and knives, so the hands which were making lethal items started to make life saving instruments.
To institutionalize the local expertise of surgical instruments and provide common facilities to the
manufactures, the British Government established the metal industry development centre (MIDC)
in 1941. This centre helped the industry to shift basic metal products to precision surgical
instrument manufacturing.
In 1958 the Surgical Instrument Manufacturing Association of Pakistan was incorporated which
safe guarded the interests of the industry. The Surgical Association since than is regularly playing
a central roll in addressing issues at the Government level, nominating trade delegations and

participants for trade fairs and exhibitions, handling inter-industry issues and representing the
industry at various local and international forums.
Surgical association has 3000 members firms and about 500000 peoples directly or indirectly are
getting benefits from this industry. From the surgical industry we are earning about 225 million
U$ dollar (this is according to the report of the financial year 2009 -2010).
In Sialkot over Five thousand different medical instruments, covering all section of surgery such
as electro medical instruments micro surgery instruments, Cardiovascular, endoscope,
Gynecological, ENT, Respiratory AID Orthopedic instruments, Hollowware,Strategy Working Group
Surgical Instruments and Medical Devices Sector
Overview SWOT Recommendations Targets
Anesthesia Products, Hospital Furniture, Dental Instruments, Veterinary Instruments, Beauty
Care and Beauty Saloon Instruments are produced and exported all over the world.
In 1994 the industry has to face a ban on imports of surgical instruments from Pakistan by US
authority Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This ban forced the industry to improve its
manufacturing and management systems. Now with the result of this ban every industry has
acquire ISO Certification, secondly, a material testing laboratory was established in joint
collaboration with TDAP where material is tested according to international standard.
Improving the perception and market value of all types of instruments being Manufactured in
Pakistan should be on top of our agenda. If you analyze the export figures, the volume of
instruments has consistently gone up but value wise it has come down.
Further, we must also note that the US Dollar has become stronger by over 30% in last 4 years
and so actually our instruments have depreciated in value. We may be getting more Rupees, but
definitely lower in Dollar terms. This is not a good sign.
We must change the cheap perception of our products and also learn to stop competing ruthlessly
among ourselves. This type of attitude will not help to build an industry. We must have a long
term plan, which includes all stake holders, both government and private sector, to plan to

completely overhaul the whole industry in the next 5 years. This will not only bring ample jobs to
Sialkot and the vicinity, it will greatly enhance our exports.
I suggest, make a team of 10 to 15 major stake holders and come up with an 'out of the box
plan that will totally change the face of this industry.Production Flow Chart
