WHAT IS MUSIC…????
• Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both)
combined in such a way as to produce
beauty of form, harmony, and expression
of emotion.
• Regular and controlled vibrations is called
music.
TYPES OF MUSIC IN INDIA
Indian music can be classified into various
types based on their structure into
• Traditional music (Hindustani, Carnatic music)
• Folk music
• Pop music
• Rock music
• Hip Hop
ORIGIN OF INDIAN MUSIC
• Indian music finds its origin in the Vedas.
• The Samaveda, one of the four Vedas
describes Indian music at length.
• It is believed that Indian music is the basic
foundation for all other musical forms.
HINDUSTANI MUSIC
• Majorly found in the northern part of
the Indian sub-continent
• It is highly influenced by the Islamic and
Mughal culture
• Tabla and harmonium are the major
instruments used in this type of music.
CARNATIC MUSIC• Carnatic music is a part of the south-
Indian culture.
• It is often referred as refined and more
structured form of music compared to
Hindustani music
• The primary instruments used are
Mridhangam and violin
• Carnatic Music is primarily classified
into 72 ragas
RAGAM AND THALAM
• The traditional system of Indian music is based on these two pillars.
• The Raga uses around five or more notes which are constructed in various
patterns to form the melody.
• However the way the modes are approached and rendered in musical phrases
and the mood they convey are important in defining a raga.
• The raga can be roughly associated with Scales or modes in Western music.
• Talam generally refers to the rhythmic pattern
• It is very complex in structure compared to western music where simple rhythmic structures are followed.

FOLK MUSIC
• Indian folk music is diverse because of its
vast cultural diversity
• Most folk music in India are dance oriented.
• Folk music is also largely influenced by local
practices and culture.
POP MUSIC
• Indian pop music is a combination of Indian
classical, folk and modern beats.
• Pop music is majorly influenced by Indian
cinema.
• Some greats in this field of music are
A.R.Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Latha
Mangeshkar etc.
ROCK MUSIC
• Rock music in India is majorly due to the
influence of western civilisation.
• Major cities like Kochi, Mumbai, Bangalore,
Delhi etc. have emerged as a melting pots
for rock guitar enthusiast
• Fusion of rock and Metal playing styles
along with Indian folk music led to the birth
of a new style of playing commonly referred
as “Indian rock” or “Vedic metal”
BIRTH OF LEGENDS AND WORLD FAMOUS BANDS
• The birth of alternate rock music and
Vedic metal led to the birth of world
famous bands like Coshish, Avial,
Motherjane, Thaikkudam Bridge etc.
• Mr Baiju Dharmajan, also referred as
“GOD OF SMALL STRINGS” is a world
renowned guitarist who is famous for
his unique style called “Carnatic Rock”
HIP HOP
• The HIP HOP culture in India started around 1990s
• It has flourished since then and has become a
trend among youth.
• This form of music is influenced by western
culture and the Indian Film industry.
• Artists like Baba Sehgai and Yo Yo Honey Singh
shot to fame by performing hip hop in regional
languages.
FUTURE OF INDIAN MUSIC
• new trends are continuously growing and influencing the people of
this country
• The traditional and folk form of music are slowly becoming a story of
the past.
• It is our duty to preserve the traditional music forms without loosing
its fine essence as it forms the basic foundation of everything new and
trendy.
