The Imo 3-Screw pump is a positive displacement rotarydesign consisting of a rotor housing which envelopes thedrive screw or power rotor, and the sealing screws, or idlerrotors. The power rotor is driven and the idler rotors turndue to the action of the fluid being pumped.
The intermeshing of the threads of the 3-screw pumprotors and the close fit of the surrounding housing createsa moving labyrinth seal, which captures fluid andtransports it axially. The captured fluid is called a fluidclosure (see Figure A). Depending on the length of thescrew set and the surrounding housing, there may be anumber of fluid closures continually moving axially fromthe suction side of the pump to the discharge side. Themoving fluid closure concept provides the 3-screw pumpwith its positive displacement capability. The pumpingelement does not pre-compress the fluid, but merelytransports the fluid from the suction port to the dischargeport of the pump in a smooth and continuous manner.
Designs are available insealless configurationssuch as magnetic drivesand canned motor arrange-ments. The magnetic drivescrew pump is used exten-sively for pumping isocyanate,a component of urethane, as well asother difficult environmentally unfriendly fluids.
Imo 3-screw pumps are also used for water injectionservices (TRITEC Series), as well as high pressuremachine tool coolants (EMTEC Series).
Symmetrical pressure loading on the power rotor elimi-nates the need for bearings to absorb radial forces. Theidler rotors generate a hydrodynamic (see Figure B) filmwhile rotating in the surrounding housing bore whichprovides the radial support similar to journal bearings.
In most designs, axial loads on the power rotors and idlerrotors, created by differential pressure, are hydrostaticallybalanced, increasing pump life dramatically.

Three screw pumps are the largest class of multiple screwpumps in service today. They are commonly used for:
• Machinery Lubrication
• Hydraulic Elevators
• Fuel Oil Transport and Burner Service
• Powering Hydraulic Machinery
• Refinery Processes for High Temperature Productssuch as asphalt, vacuum tower bottoms and residualfuel oils
• Crude Oil Pipeline Service as well as gathering, boosting and loading of barges and ships.
• They are common in engine rooms on most of theworld’s commercial marine vessels and many combatships.

NSS Series Tank Mounted Lube Oil Pump
Figure B
The reliable pump people 2The reliable pump people1 The reliable pump people5
The NSS series of centrifugal pumps is intended forvertical, tank mounted lubrication services where mediumto large flow rates arerequired at relatively lowdischarge pressures.Packages are designed tosuit customer specific tankdepth. Piping can be sizedand oriented to suit systemrequirements. Typically, pumps have no shaft seal, are extremely simple anduse modern impellerdesigns for optimumperformance.
Although standard designsare available, NSS pumpassemblies can be designedand made to order. Size andshape of the tank mountingplate can be specified assquare, rectangular, round, etc. The discharge connectioncan face in any direction including a return downward andback through the mounting plate. Piping size and outletflange type, size and facing can all be specified to suitcustomer requirements. An optional discharge checkvalve can also be supplied.
The success of the CIG series pump lies in thefundamental design principle of using hydrodynamic lift toseparate all moving contact areas. This internal geardesign does not use any axial or radial compensation, virtually eliminating contamination potentially caused byaxially loaded side plates or radial thrust shoe designs. Theonly loaded parts are the sleeve bearings of the drive shaftand the housing surrounding the outer ring gear, whichalso acts as a sleeve bearing.
The “hydrodynamic lift”, or fluid film support, is createdthrough the friction of the fluid media. This is formedbetween the shaft bushing and the shaft and also betweenthe ring-gear outside diameter and gear housing insidediameter. This hydrodynamic lift prevents metal-to-metalcontact between the stationary and rotating components, therefore there is no metal contact or wear. The ring gearand shaft float on a film of the fluid being pumped.
• Low Pressure RippleTypically less than 1% peak to peak at maximumpressure performance.
• Long LifeThis can be directlyattributed to thepatented gear toothprofile and its lowHertzian compressionstresses during themeshing phase of thegears, along with the incorporation of thehydrodynamic principle.
• Low Contamination SensitivityTypically, CIG pumps exhibit excellent resistance to flowdegradation when compared to many other pump de-signs. Durable materials, along with design simplicity, provide outstanding durability.
• Low NoiseTypically less than 68 db(A) for most applications. Thepatented gear tooth profile used in the CIG productreduces trapped fluid and backlash in the gears reducingpressure pulsations, which in turn lowers airborne noise.
• Wide Speed RangeThe CIG pump can operate at high speed without asuction boost, with excellent suction lift characteristics.
• Modular DesignAvailable in single pumps, double pumps or triple pumpconfigurations where each pump shares a common driveshaft requiring only one driver and saving space.
• Wide Application RangeAble to handle fluids with viscosities as low as 0.2 cStand is applied at pressures up to 5000 PSI (345 BAR).
Crescent Internal Gear (CIG) Pumps www.Imo-Pump.com
Design Philosophy
For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned thatthe gear teeth do touch each other along a given line. Atthis point, metal-to-metal contact cannot be avoided. Thisproblem, however, is solved with a special patented geartooth profile, which greatly reduces the Hertziancompression stresses (gear tooth contact loads) on thegear flanks compared to an Involute profile. Also, therelative velocities in the area of the largest forces on thegear teeth are kept small in the relationship to the strengthof the material.
CIG pumps are commonly used for lubrication, scavenge,high-pressure fuel and hydraulic applications in mobile orstationary environments. The product is capable ofhandling a broad range of fluids with low or high viscositiesat flow rates from 1 to 115 GPM (3.8 to 435 liters/minute) ina single pump. Multiple pumps can be provided on a singledrive shaft to save space.
Pump Features
• Low Pressure RippleA screw pump typically provides pressure pulsationsless than 1% RMS at operating pressure. This is signifi-cantly lower than many other pump types such as thevane or external gear.
• Long LifeA screw pump typically provides 10 times the life ofother pump designs under a wide variety of operatingenvironments and fluids. Idler rotors are torque compen-sated so they do not transmit any torque to the powerrotor. This ability to achieve long life in a variety ofoperating environments can be directly attrituable to thelack of Hertzian compression stresses during themeshing phase of the screws.
• Low Contamination SensitivityTypically 3-screw pumps exhibit excellent resistance toflow degradation caused by contamination when com-pared to other pump designs such as vane or externalgear, even when running twice the speed.
• Low NoiseThe rotor profile used in the screw pump provides acontinuous smooth output flow, reducing pressurepulsations to a negligible amount, which in turn, lowersairborne, fluid-borne and structure-borne noise asshown in Figure C.
• Excellent Suction LiftThe small peripheral diameters of the rotors and the lowaxial velocity of the fluid provide excellent suction liftperformance compared to other pump designs providingsimilar output flows. This gives the 3-screw pump aninherent advantage in negative suction pressure applica-tions allowing the pumping of higher viscosity fluids atmuch higher speeds than vane or external gear stylepumps.
• Low Horsepower ConsumptionThe small peripheral diameters of the rotors and low fluidaxial velocities reduce fluid shearing within the pump andtherein reduce horsepower consumption while operatingon high viscosity fluids.
• Excellent Scavenge PerformanceThe geometry of the rotors utilized in our 3-screwproduct provides inherent advantages in scavengeapplications. The centrifugal action of the screw profileforces fluid to the outside diameter of the screws. Thiscentrifugal action of the screws, combined with thepositive displacement feature provides superior hydrody-namics in environment where high levels of entrainedand soluble air are encountered.
