"Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
& to God what belongs to God"
Jesus' opponents often questioned him on matters
concerning religion, and his answers only served to
increase his reputation. His enemies then shifted their
questions to affairs of the state. Two groups attempted
to entrap Jesus about the legitimacy of paying taxes to
Rome. The Herodians, supporters of Rome's puppet-
king Herod, favored the tax, while the Pharisees
objected to being subjected to a foreign power. Jesus
faced a dilemma. His answers might involve him either
with the Roman government, or with the great
Sanhedrin. No matter how he responded, one or the
other group would be dissatisfied. Jesus asked to see
one of the Roman coins bearing the inscription:
"Tiberius Caesar, Son of the Divine Augustus" (14-37
AD). Since his opponents were using the emperor's
coins and participating in his economic system, they
had already taken upon themselves the duty of paying
taxes to the emperor. Jesus, the true Son of the August
God, told his opponents to pay the tax. Money belonged
to the temporal order, and its power was transitory.
Jesus challenged his opponents to look at a deeper level.
Had they paid their debt to God whose power was
eternal?

World Mission Sunday 2017
Pope Francis message:
Once again this year, World Mission Day gathers us
around the person of Jesus, "the very first and greatest
evangelizer" (Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, 7), who
continually sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel of the
love of God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit.
This Day invites us to reflect anew on the mission at the
heart of the Christian faith. The Church is missionary
by nature; otherwise, she would no longer be the
Church of Christ, but one group among many others
that soon end up serving their purpose and passing
away. So it is important to ask ourselves certain
questions about our Christian identity and our
responsibility as believers in a world marked by
confusion, disappointment and frustration, and torn by
numerous fratricidal wars that unjustly target the
innocent. What is the basis of our mission? What is the
heart of our mission? What are the essential approaches
we need to take in carrying out our mission?

“Circle of Love” Prayer Network
Rosary will be said, beginning the
first Sunday of October, at 7: 35 a.m. and
continue each Sunday following. We will
be praying the Rosary outside, by Mary's
statue, weather permitting. Please join us
for this weekly event, as everyone is
welcome.
Faith Formation
Love and Honor God
Payment of taxes is unlikely to be a disputed issue in your
family. Yet families can still learn something from this
Gospel reading. Jesus’ answer to the Herodians and
Pharisees redirects their question to focus on the issue of
greatest importance: loving and honoring God. Taking this
perspective can help us make good judgments about the
competing issues of importance in our lives.
As your family gathers, make a list of the activities that
your family spends time doing together, such as household
tasks, jobs, academics, and recreational activities. Talk about
the importance of each of these activities. Ask what would
happen if there were an imbalance in our attention to these
activities and we spent too much time on one activity at the
expense of another.
In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us of the necessity of
giving things their proper importance. Read Matthew 22:15-
21. The Herodians and Pharisees were giving too much
importance to the issue of the payment of taxes. Jesus
reminds them that loving and honoring God is of greater
importance. In family life we do many important things, but
we remember that God is of the greatest importance in our
lives. Pray together that your family will learn to keep things
in proper perspective, remembering to keep God first in your
lives. (Excerpt from the Sunday Connection. © Loyola Press. Used with

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary
Each year, we dedicate the month of October to the most Holy
Rosary, a devotion to our Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother. The
Rosary is a form of vocal and mental prayer on the Mysteries of
our Redemption, divided into fifteen decades. The recitation of
each decade is accompanied by meditation on one of fifteen events
or "mysteries." The mysteries consist of The Joyful Mysteries
(prayed on Mondays & Saturdays). The Luminous Mysteries
(prayed on Thursdays) The Sorrowful Mysteries (prayed on
Tuesdays & Fridays) and the Glorious Mysteries (prayed on
Sundays & Wednesdays).
The Rosary is an old prayer that is always new, leading us to Jesus
through Mary. We can trace the beginning of the Rosary to the
12th century when the people who could not read or write would
count their prayers on a string of beads. The word rosary means a
garland or bouquet of roses. The Blessed
Mother urged everyone to pray the Rosary
during her apparitions at Fatima, Portugal.
She called herself "Lady of the Rosary"
and promised that the Rosary would help
people grow in their faith, convert sinners
and bring about world peace.
It is important for us to "Pray" the Rosary,
not just 'say' the Rosary. Think about
what you are praying for, don't just say
the words.
